Transmeta Unveiled

from the no-big-surprises dept

Okay, so by now it’s all over the place, but if you haven’t read about what Transmeta is doing you’re falling behind. No big surprises came out of the announcement, but it will be interesting to see if they can really compete.

Interesting tech approach...

It basically translates x86 code to its own internal VLSI (SP?) stuff, then runs it. Which makes me wonder how much faster native code for it would be.

Also, the ultralow power consumption makes me wonder if you couldn’t make some kind of solar-powered Crusoe device. It would be good for automobile computer systems, too: no need to boot up when you start up the car, especially if you’re running Linux on it, just put it into the energy-miser sleep mode.
