Announcing Ctrl-Alt-Speech: A New Podcast About Online Speech
from the ctrl-alt-speech dept
I’m super excited to announce our brand new podcast, created in partnership with Ben Whitelaw, who runs the brilliant Everything in Moderation newsletter: Ctrl-Alt-Speech. It’s a weekly news podcast that Ben and I will be co-hosting, exploring what’s happening in the world of online speech. It will cover issues related to trust & safety, content moderation, regulations around the world, court rulings, new services, technologies and much, much more.
Subscribe now in whatever your favorite podcast app is — you can check out the player above or the website to find links to various platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music, and you can also subscribe directly via the RSS feed. There’s a teaser trailer episode available on the feed already, and if you subscribe now, you’ll get our first full episode as soon as it’s released.
Each episode will consist of a discussion on a few top stories each week. Ben, myself, and various guests will help you understand important news from the last week regarding online speech, what it really means, and why it matters to you. Ben and I have both been covering this space for years, so we’re able to really dig deep and put the week’s news in a larger, global perspective.
Our goal is to make the absolute “must listen” podcast for anyone who cares about online speech and wants to understand what’s happening around the world.
And our coverage will be truly global. Discussions of online speech too often focus solely on the U.S., but so much important is happening elsewhere. Obviously, the EU’s regulatory efforts will be a key point of discussion, but also many of the global majority countries are engaging with issues regarding online speech, and we’ll be covering many such stories as well.
I already mentioned guests, and Ben and I each have deep contact books of global experts with a variety of different perspectives. We expect to regularly have guests on, whether it’s to talk about a specific news story in which they have expertise, or just to jam with us about the week’s news.
We’re grateful that we’re launching with financial support from the Future of Online Trust & Safety Fund, a fiscally-sponsored multi-donor fund at Global Impact that is focused on building a more robust, capable, and inclusive Trust & Safety ecosystem.
We are also looking for additional sponsors! We have some great ones lined up, but we’re looking for more. Each episode will have a single exclusive sponsor, who will get to join us for a short discussion relevant to the world of online speech. If you’re interested and want to learn more, please contact us today.
Ben and I have been working on this for many months, planning out the podcast, and we’re super excited to finally announce it and get it flowing into your ears soon.

Oh good, a new forum for you to lie in.
“Don’t worry kids, Amazon definitely banned that book cuz of Buzzfeed…that they didn’t hear about until 3 days after”
“Don’t worry kids, like 40 ex FBI spooks working at twitter, together, is totally normal!”
Re:
If you ever had anything to say, i’d be shocked.
Re:
Don’t worry kids, Bratty Matty doesn’t know in what direction time flows.
As opposed to ctrl+alt+delete speech, which has one of the most widely mocked comic panels of all time

Newspeak
1984 levels of cringe
“ctrl-alt-speech” “content moderation”
You guys just hate using the word “censorship”, because of the negative connotations, of trying to thought police people.
Edward Bernays would be proud.
Re:
We use the word censorship for censorship and we use the word moderation for moderation. If you can’t distinguish the meaning between the two words may I suggest a remedial class in English.
Techdirt Podcast
Mike, will this new podcast affect the Techdirt podcast in any way, shape, or form?
Re:
Not in general!
We do plan to run a few promos on episodes of the Techdirt podcast, and maybe put some teaser excerpts from this podcast into the Techdirt feed between regular episodes – plus at some point Ben will be joining Mike on the Techdirt Podcast to talk about the launch of Ctrl-Alt-Speech.
But other than that additional stuff, the Techdirt Podcast will be proceeding as normal!

Okay, thank you! That had me worried for a bit…

And our coverage will be truly global
Yeah right. What’s the bet these whites will completely ignore Africa. The second biggest continent, with fifty four different countries, a billion people, is going to be completely ignored by these racist white men. I will put money on it!
In discussions on Europe, I am worried about European regulations such as GDPR, DSA, the DMA, and individual European countries’ laws against things such as hate speech being unfairly maligned, given Mike’s opinions on them. I hope that it won’t be the case.
Great stuff, Mike! You are on the right track with this podcast. Sounds great and an excellent and important topic!
