Ever since the RIAA went after the original Napster, plenty of people have suggested that the strategy could only backfire. The more they try to shut down popular services or sue individuals, the more it just pushes those services underground where it’s even more difficult for the RIAA to keep attacking. At the same time, it builds up even more anger at the traditional entertainment industry. From the beginning, they could have learned to embrace file sharing as a promotional tool, recognizing that an awful lot of people were giving them market research data on how they wanted to interact with content online. Instead, they keep suing and looking bad, which doesn’t seem to have much strategic value. And, in response, the thing they’re trying to stop keeps getting bigger while going further underground. The latest is that the Pirate Party of Sweden is offering up a commercial internet service that includes anonymous usage, which they claim will make it nearly impossible for the industry to accuse users of file sharing. Remember, the Pirate Party became a widely known effort only after the entertainment industry tried (and failed) to shut down The Pirate Bay, helping to drive their traffic through the roof. While the group is a bit over the top in their methods, whether or not you agree with their general position, it should have been clear ages ago that this was where things would eventually head. The industry had a chance to embrace this stuff ages ago, but with each passing bad decision, they simply make things more difficult for themselves.

Before the “protect the children” politicians decide that this “anonymous coward”‘ webhosting could be used by terrorists to hurt the children, and enacts legislation to border-block all the IPs of countries that have not signed treaties requiring everyone keeo full logs of all usage and turn them over to each other at the mere passing whim and fancy…
Well, our gov’t is slow (speaking for US here, well, not speaking FOR the us.. but.. er.. hopefully you get the point), so it will be at least a year or two.
But I have no doubt that its coming.

The artists create the music, the recording companies steal it from them. Then claim to own it, although they did not create it, and then try to claim that everyone else is stealing it from them.
So who owns music again, the artists, or the recording companies? Most households now have adequate recording equipment, (digital media) and the service of recording and packaging music is no longer needed, so the recording company business model is obsolete.
Anyone could actually buy and record music directly from the artists, and cut out the “middle man” who now adds no value, since recording capability of that quality is now common place.

You guys are hosers. How do bring friggin’ hell and the bible into this? The original post here, by Mike is right on. he’s simply pointing out that the music industry had an excellent opportunity to make something out of this (Internet, file sharting, etc etc) but they didn’t it. they instead looied for short term results which has pushed the “players” underground. Bully for them!

Sure there does. Don’t misinterpret illegal for right or moral. They are VERY different things. Just because something is illegal doesn’t mean that the law stating such is a good law – but it still exists.
In this case, IMHO, any law stating that a 1-to-1 electronic copy of a file is illegal should be considered unethical and uninforcable.
The difference between IP infringement and stealing. IP infringement is NOT stealing – although it is still illegal.
IMHO per-use or specific-use licenses for software or any electronic media is bullshit. Once someone purchases the right to listen to music, for example, we should retain that right to listen to that music anytime, anywhere and on any device we choose – those who say we should not are money-grubbing scourge which should be tworn in two.

I was always taught that sharing was good. Share your toys, your candy, etc…but evidently not your music.
Just recently Metallica made their music available for download on iTunes, with incentives being new material and un-released songs. After the big stink those money hungry idiots made about file sharing, I wouldn’t even consider buying any of their music. That’s how I feel about the RIAA. It used to be that I might buy an album if I really liked the music (Back in Black anyone?), but now, I wouldn’t buy it at all. The RIAA didn’t get much money from me anyway, but now they’ll get none of it. One day they’ll fall, and it’ll be glorious.
Internet only serves democracy
File sharing has grown because people like it. Recording companies have decreased because people don’t like them (original CDs/software/etc is very expensive compared to the cost of production they have). So Internet is only speeding up democracy and recording companies are losing in the natural selection game…
It’s fredom, it’s capitalism, it’s evolution, it’s natural selection, it’s too perfect for the governement to let it be!

The whole OMGZOR filesharing, copyright, patent ect show is just a last ditch attempt by the Dinosaurs of old to try and protect their aging business model. Instead of innovating, embracing the new generation of music and distribution they are crushing it under their feet. One day though, they will stomp so heavily on something that the ground will crack beneath their feet and they will be gone.

There are correlations with the Games industry, steam for example, great, innovative. The thing with the Core of the gaming community is with savvy users who know their stuff, they will notice something like Steam when it comes along and embrace it. The problem with the Music Industry is Joe Common doesnt realise when he is being ripped off and doesnt seem to care, so when new things such as filesharing comes along they dont jump on.
There is more than one guilty party here.
The general public is as much to blame as the record companys because they are happy going about their lives without standing up and saying “No, this isnt right, Im not buying your DRM’d shit anymore” en mass.
The Artists dont realise that there is a huge and viable business model for themselves out there which could lead to much bigger profits for themselves.
And the demon itself the recording studios, aka the RIAA, aka, the Government (Hey they might as well be one political party these days, they are all in bed together). They just generally suck.

The Artists _do_ realize that they can reach out to their audience directly. And we’re trying. Even some smaller labels (the non “big five”..er..four now…soon to be three) have figured this out and are doing their best to market to the internet.
Support ’em. _Buy_ a copy of their music, FFS. _Then_, if the artists are smart enough, they’ll give ya permission to file share to your heart’s content.
But somebody has to buy the first copy, or the artist has to go eat more Ramen.

Man, I remember a few years back during the Napster days and 56k; downloading songs in an hour if you’re lucky. And then came Broadband internet, and I knew right off the bat it was a sign of a revolution, an Information Revolution.
The technology is moving at an incredible pace, and laws and the government can not keep up. I must agree, they had a golden opportunity, not to capitalize, but for damage control and they did not take it. Instead they chose to fan the flames via law suits and legislation.
There’s no way they can say they didn’t see this storm coming. If a lazy punk high schooler who slept through most of it realized it, their Ivy brain trust should of telegraph it a country mile away.
Computer savy generation + affordable technology = bad news RIAA. It’s the Snowball effect, it’s rolling and I don’t even think God himself can stop it.

PS I really liked the the comparrison with the Lord multipling the fish without buying them, but In a sense this is not a valid comparrison for a couple of reasons.

2. The only reason God done this is to glorify his Son…not to feed the people. The people should have used a bit of sense and brought a bag lunch. I would think if you go into the wilderness and there are no Resturants around you might think to bring food. So gives the feeling they were allowed to forget So God could glorify Christ.

The entertainment industry seems to only know “lawsuits” as the only thing to protect them from piracy. I think that there are other ways to protect their own without subjecting to this kind of action.
