Merced Tapes Out

from the and-what-does-that-mean-for-me dept

Merced has finally been finished, just a year and a half late, but hey, you try to design a new chip architechture with explicitly-parallel execution rather than plain-vanilla predictive execution. See how many bits you have left over when you’re done.

It will be years before this hits the desktop in any meaningful way, but the big hope is that it will move to the Internet server world much sooner, perhaps to challenge Sun’s lock on that market. I would love to see how fast Quake II/III will run on it. Sigh….
