  I've thought about this too, but I think when an artist uses perceived value effectively, instead of offering things for free, it can help them in the long-run.
  
  I think there's a balance though. Giving away everything for free is not the best idea, but allowing people to sample a decent amount may make them feel obligated to give back.

  Having links to your site does help (I've read that relevancy is debatable), but having outbound and inbound links is even better.
  
  It's supposed to be a simple way of saying that one site trusts this site, which helps them improve in rank, but it's also driven by the people, which is why the ranking can get so fickle.
  
  According to Rand at SEOMOZ, it seems like Google is really pushing towards a citation method of improving rank. They apparently studied several sites and noticed they were ranking for keywords connected with their brand name on other websites.

  I'm skeptical to a degree about the Milk AC being AJ, mainly because I went through this blog post - https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130118/20070421737/week-later-reflecting-aaron-swartz.shtml. The AC spouting the milk nonsense has a deep red icon while the one I believe to be AJ has a blue one, but hell, they're both ACs so who knows.

  It is difficult to take the whole morality argument seriously when record labels have a fine habit of providing a paltry 9% royalty rate on mechanical licenses with little to no overhead.

  I remember reading about how it would help keep them from getting into legal hot water again (I'm sure the DOJ would find some kind of excuse, nevertheless) and how it would be generated locally, but I wonder if he considered other measures to limiting the ability to share on a massive scale.
