Which Dot Com Commercials Were the Best

from the advertising dept

MSNBC took a poll to see which dot com commercials were favorites and it turns out the Monster.com kids commercial won out. I agree that it is a very good commercial. They also have the famous Ameritrade "Stuart" commercials, which personally bug the hell out of me. There's a small discussion of the eToys commercial and the fact that lots of folks want to know about the song that's used for it (I know someone here at Techdirt even wrote eToys to find out what song it was). They don't mention it, but I have to admit that my new "favorite" TV commercial is the Send.com golf outing ad.

    the song...

by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Hawaiian) on his album Facing Future, the song is called Somewhere Over the Rainbow/ What a Wonderful World. The song is a wonderful melange of both. In the commercial it sounds as if they've had a woman overdub the music to make it more soothing? IZ, as he is called, is about as mellow as they come and the music on his album is just fantastic. Regrettably, his eToys fame is posthumous; Iz died a few years ago.

    etoys music

Just in case you have been unable to find the music. I too was intrigued to go on the hunt and discovered that the song is "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by a Israel Kamakawiwo'ole-a Hawaiian artist who died in '93 due to obesity.

Yes, he died of Respiratory failure. I was also in respiratory failure in July of 1997, but I did survive the horrific event. It is a shame that one with such talent was taken to this syndrome. For more information about ARDS visit www.ards.org
