I Text You A Happy New Year

from the how-positively-impersonal dept

This year I received one "text message" from a friend's mobile phone wishing me a happy New Year. I'd be surprised if most people here in the U.S. received any such messages. However, in the UK, people went text messaging crazy and sent 77.5 million text messages on New Year's Day - far surpassing any previous record for text messaging. I guess it's no wonder that the friend who sent me the text message keeps saying how much he wants to move to London.

...they turned off phone messaging, claiming that it would overwhelm the network.... which is interesting... I wonder if the SMS/i-mode infrastructure is "best effort" once you depart from the standard telco circuit mode (and remember, even ethernet will drop packets after 16 succesive collisions).

Yeah, I sent about 15-20 text messages just before midnight. Then the network got overloaded. Heh.
