  • More People Realizing That Copy Protection Is Just Bad

    Re: Personal Responsibility

    >>the guy making thousands of illegal copies and selling them as actual cds, not a 12 year old sharing a file.

Pirates have been coping software for decades, they just could not distribute them.

The issue is that the average user can now copy and distribute the content world wide in minutes.

DRM is a response to stop the average user not the pirate.

Just as car locks, alarms and immobilisers are to stop the average joy rider not the pro car thief.

Why you think that companies are spending all this extra money on DRM creation?

    Personal Responsibility

All I hear from posters on this type of thread is how it is RIAA's fault for having an 'outdated business model' that you are violating copyright.
Or that if content providers had better content you would pay for it.
Or that the content creator would not have made much money from it so you taking it for free is OK.
    TAKE SOME PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!
Accept you are too cheap to pay for what you want so you take it for free, depriving the creator of his income.
Accept that you cannot create this kind of content so you place no value on its creation.
Accept it is wrong and hurting the content creators, providers and the fans prepared to pay for the product.
Accept that invasive DRM (ie rootkits, StarForce) are your fault. If you did not take content without compensating those who created it, we would not need these forms of protection.
Accept that DRM will get worse before it gets better. The next step is hardware level authentication and none of us want that.....
    >>The product is the ARTIST themselves
Who wrote the 'GTA3 SA' levels?
Who was the lead artist on 'DOOM3'?
Name one member of the development team for 'World of Warcraft'?

Yeah, the 'artist' is the product.....

    Re: CAL

What happened to fair use for research?

"fair dealing for the purpose of research or study:
allows a student or researcher to copy protected material. Copying 10% or one chapter of a published literary, dramatic or musical work of 10 pages or more, and one article from a periodical, is deemed to be fair,"

I suppose they just need more cash...

?In global terms, CAL compares more than favourably with its counterparts, distributing to members an average of $AUD2.49 per capita of population. By comparison, the US distributes an average of $AUD 0.43c, Canada $AUD0.78c and the UK $AUD1.41,? Mr Fraser CE of CAL

    Quotes from CAL web site

So does me reading / posting that violate CALs copyright and require me to pay CAL?

Why is it that Americans are not up in arms about the voting irregularities?

Is it only obvious to non Americans that your voting system has been corrupted?

Why has no one insisted that Diebold remove (or at least change) the default crypto key hard coded into all the voting machines in the US? The key has been available on google for over two years now.

The kicker for me was multiple results (in Colarado) all having the margin of 818181 (hahaha in leet)...

I suppose the US has the best government money can buy....

Re: What company doesn't include this stuff anymor

You have to follow the trail back to 180 site to find out that the affiliate mentioned in the 180 press release is not the one reported by Ben Edelman. There was another one.

Wonder if that is the reason Edelman did not disclose which 'affiliate' was corrupt, he knew there was more than one.

The exploit is basic as well and could easily be prevented if 180 wanted to. Obviously they have a motive not to fix the expolit.

I wonder if an advertiser can sue 180? Do purchasers pay/purchase based on the size of 180's client/user base? (Which is, of course, exagerated.)

    To paraphrase Einstein;
There are two things that I think are unlimited, the universe and stupidity, and I?m not so sure about the former?.

What most people don?t realize is these are called ?confidence? tricks not because they gain your confidence but because they take you into theirs, by telling you something embarrassing / damaging about themselves.
They are willing to trust you with their most embarrassing secret, so why shouldn?t you trust them?

Got to love social engineering, much easier to get someone to tell you the password than try and crack it.

  • Japan To Ban Sale Of Second Hand Electronics?

    TechNoFear ( profile ), 22 Feb, 2006 @ 11:17pm

Re: try singapore, but its 10 years.

    >> I could find NO "ASIAN" COUNTRY which enforces a mandatory replacement of vehichles after 5 years (let alone "most").

Japan requires you have your car 'inspected' every three years. This is expensive and time consuming.
You also pay taxes/registration/licence based on the age of the car, as the car becomes older the fees increase dramatically.
Repairs are also incredibly expensive, making replacement cheaper than repairs after even a minor accident.
So it may not be 'law' in Japan but is uneconomic not to replace your car after five years (before the six year inspection).

Like trying to repair/upgrade an old PC, it is cheaper and easier to buy a new one....

Prahaps if this version of 'the modern world' could still supply a job for life and a living wage, parents would have enough time to properly raise their children.

How many of you (over 35) had both parents working? How many of us now have to have two incomes to survive?

Prahaps its because the alterative is watching TV.

In any game your brain is doing something (outputting) most of the time, even if that is trying to time you button smashes. Sort of mental exercise.

When watching TV your brain is doing nothing, most of the time.

    BzzzzzT! Wrong!

Try a search for 'Opener' or Renepo (circa 2004)
It disables the OS X firewall, steals info, spreads to network shares and deletes data. Sounds like a virus/worm to me.

No one bothers to attack OS X because it will never be able to run a Warhol virus (too slow and not enough boxes).

Re: Increased the 'prize' to $10,000

StarForce increased the prize to $10,000 last week (24/01/2006). Not much time to fly to Moscow and meet them during business hours before 01/02/2006.
A cynical person would say that increase is just to make the 'contest' look more credible to StarForces customers.
But I'm just saying this because I'm a pirate frustrated by StarForce copy protection.
Excuse me, I'm off to the poop deck...arrr!

  • Speed Camera Catches Thousands Of Supposed Speeders In One Day

    TechNoFear ( profile ), 24 Jan, 2006 @ 06:21pm

    Re: Speeders?

Australia has had speed cameras for many years, evil little things. They are the non fixed type and are moved around each day.

The operators set the speed low so they can also catch you other offences. (ie not wearing a seat belt = Au$200)

Now they fine you for exceeding the speed limit by >5Kmh (~3Mph) (Au$50). Just a revenue raising exercise.

People now know that there can only be one car in the photo for the police to charge you. So now you find people driving in 'packs'. The speeders racing from pack to pack or speeding along in pairs.

    So much safer....
