Nigerians Let Bill Gates Fight Their Scammers
from the um.--ok. dept
It must be that time of year. Every so often someone official in the Nigerian government will make some sort of public statement about how the country's going to crackdown on 419 Advance Fee scams and every year, nothing much happens -- probably because those scams represent a noticeable percentage of the country's economy. So, here they are again, but this time, the plan appears to be twofold. Step One: outlaw spam. Step Two: bring in Microsoft to track down the spammers. Considering that Nigerian scams are already quite illegal and mostly go unpunished in Nigeria, does anyone actually think that outlawing the lesser offense of spamming is going to do much good? Also, while Microsoft has some experience going after spammers in the US, it seems like the Nigerian situation is a whole different game, involving complex organized crime rings. Well, we wish them luck, and while they're cracking down on Nigerian scammers, we'll suggest they listen to our favorite "geeksta rap" song about 419 scammers, MC Frontalot's Urgent Business Relationship.

Efforts to deal with murder would be greatly helped by people refusing to be murdered.

I guess that makes attempted murder okay, since the victim - er, intended victim - didn't die.

Fraud Links
"....Nigeria is still ranked as one of the most corrupt countries on earth. U.S. citizens lose approximately $2 billion ($2,000 million) a year to Nigerian fraud -- be it credit card fraud, insurance fraud, or 419 scam letters, or counterfeiting," which totals about "two and one-half times the value of our total U.S. exports to Nigeria."
-- Nov. '99, Robert L. Mallet, Deputy Secretary of Commerce, Google
Seun, Foreign exchange is basically payment for international trade: "the exchange of goods and services across international boundaries. In most countries, it represents a significant share of GDP." It is not the same as GDP so you can't simply compare a percentage of one against the other.
If Nigerian readers disagree with the above, please link to your sources. Simply denying that there is a problem is unlikely to convince people.
