Add Colleges And Universities To The List That Fear SP2

from the leave-us-out... dept

theodp writes "Colleges and universities are less than thrilled about Windows SP2, since the automatic upgrade's coming just as hundreds of thousands of students are descending on campuses. Amidst fears that the massive, simultaneous downloads could cripple their networks or interfere with existing software, some schools have elected to temporarily ban SP2 upgrades. 'The timing is extremely unfortunate,' said a deputy CIO at George Mason University. Which raises an interesting question: What exactly constitutes malicious code distribution?" This comes just after reports that SP2 is causing plenty of trouble in the workplace. Of course, none of this is a surprise. Microsoft made it clear that they expected problems, but the back-to-school timing does seem especially unfortunate for academic IT staff members.
