Amazon As The Indicator Of Book Popularity

from the forget-the-NY-Times-best-seller-list dept

This isn't particularly new, but authors are increasingly realizing that they should be paying close attention to how well their book is selling on Amazon. It's the new "early warning" system that determine popularity - and it can be used to judge how very specific media events influence sales. Authors are even making trips to Amazon's offices to do book readings and talks with employees there. Some are hoping to get the blessing of Amazon's internal editorial staff - while others may just end up buying paid placement to try to boost their ratings. Either way, authors are increasingly looking to boost their Amazon rankings to ride the momentum in sales.

Bruce Schneier asked people to help him hack Amazon's ranking system when his latest book was released. Last month he asked for help hacking Amazon; this month he reported success. (At each link, search for "Amazon").
