Video Game As A Sequel To A Movie?
from the Tron-2.0 dept
The back and forth between video games and movies is well documented. There are movies based on video games and games based on movies. Sometimes they come out after one another, and sometimes simultaneously. However, with the video game Tron 2.0, there might be a first. The video game is being billed as the sequel to the movie itself. If you're familiar with the movie, then the fact that there's a video game as a sequel seems fitting. There's also talk that, if the game is successful, it will move back over to film for the third part in the series. More evidence that the worlds of video games and movies are colliding.

No Subject Given
Perhaps director's will start leaving their movies as cliff hangers now to get you to purchase the video game to determine how it ends. Better yet, when the movies go to DVD they can have game hints and/or alternate endings which can be useful for game play.
Bet some of the media companies (like Lucas Arts) that do movies and games could exploit this for lots of big bucks.

It's a great game
The graphics are stupendous (actually better than the movie) and it's a lot of fun. It is definitely not your typical FPS game, it's more like a Deus Ex or System Shock.

What Age Bracket
Tron came out in 1982 - 21 years ago when the "typical" gamer - or the main demographic - was still in diapers or not around yet. While they may know it from cable, I caught a few minutes of it recently and thought it hadn't aged well. It will be interesting to see if it works.
I remember the original release and actually played the ARCADE game, which I thought was pretty good at the time (anyone else remember - it had four different games based on different aspects of the movie, but the "light cycles" were the best by far).

This isn't the first sequel...
I don't know if there were any others.

Re: What Age Bracket
Tron 2.0 is more reminiscent of the Disks of Tron game (the combat training program is almost a dead-ringer for the arcade game) and the light cycles while similar are much more 3D and nicer than the original arcade game.
