When Does New Media Become Old Media?

from the underhyping dept

The problem with calling something "new media" is that at some point, it's no longer that new, anymore. A "new media" expert has noticed that most folks who work in areas that once were considered new media now just see themselves as ordinary media people. New media is no longer special. The people who have been hyping it up were laid off, and if they found new jobs, it was for much more reasonable salaries (and titles). The "new media" parts of any organization are usually just seen as another channel and not as the grand savior of the entire company, allowing them to function at a more reasonable level. It seems that new media just isn't that new any more.
