Local Cops On The ID Theft Beat

from the educating-the-cops dept

Well, it appears that the federal government has finally realized that (a) identity theft is a large and growing problem and (b) most local police don't know (or do) a damn thing about it. So, the Secret Service, the FTC, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, have put together a nice little educational package that is being sent out to police departments around the country telling them how to deal with identity theft cases. Of course, it sounds like they're giving them just the most basic information. As the number of identity theft victims grows, it's likely that authorities are going to feel compelled to do quite a bit more to prevent identity theft - though, like so many things, I wonder if this is the sort of crime that can be better stopped via technology than new laws.

    Maintain a bad credit history.

Besides being $2k to $4k richer, nobody will ever be able to get credit in your name.

Think of it as the credit industry's little gift to you for all the trouble they'll put you through in the future.
