White House: Web Security Plan Won't Invade Privacy

from the sure-it-won't dept

The White House is quickly trying to respond to reports from earlier today that their new cybersecurity plan includes the recommendation to build a huge central monitoring system to track all internet usage. The White House is now denying that's part of the plan, and says that people are misinterpreting things that have been said. If anything, they're only recommending that companies should set up a system to monitor aggregate traffic. The question, of course, is on the implementation of such a system. If it's really designed just to get early warning of an attack, it could be useful. However, if there's any way it can be used for snooping, then there's a problem.
