Congressman Gets Reporter Fired For Email

from the so-much-power,-so-much-time-to-waste dept

Karl wrote in with a link to a story about an LA Times reporter who was fired for emailing his Congressman a fairly negative email... from his work email account. The Congressman's office later called the reporter to confirm that he worked for the Times, and later that day he was suspended, and eventually fired. While there are rules against using work email for personal reasons, and it seems particularly braindead for a reporter (even if it's just a sports writer) to write a nastygram to a politician, it's a bit scary for the Congressman to then force the reporter to be fired. Combined with the story from earlier today of the of the reporter fired for having a blog, and it makes you wonder just how much free expression the press really is allowed these days.
