Declare Email Independence

from the get-your-own-domain-name dept

I’ve owned my own domain for nearly five years now, and I think I still am surprised when people tell me their personal email address is a @aol.com, @attbi.com or @anyISP. What if you change ISPs? I have an @attbi.com address, I think. I’ve never used it, though, and I doubt I ever will. The idea of relying on the ISP you have as your permanent email address seems strange. I can somewhat understand those who use free webmail addresses, since they assume those companies are staying around, and you can use those addresses even if you switch ISPs. It seems I’m not the only one who wonders about such things. Simson Garfinkel’s latest column is basically telling people to get their own domain names to avoid having to deal with losing their address when they change ISPs (or their ISP changes on them).
