The Minibar That Controls The Hotel Room

from the oh-the-power... dept

If you thought mini-bars in hotels were getting more sophisticated, you haven't seen anything yet. The company that makes the e-fridge that automatically monitors the mini-bar (so you can get charged $22 for that bottle of water without the hotel even checking) is now offering an "Intelligent Room" product. It runs (of course) out of the mini-bar, but controls the lights, temperature, door locks, and even internet options in a hotel room. It seems that the main advantage is with the lights and temperature. It keeps the temperature low when no one is there. But, as someone checks in to the hotel, it automatically turns on the lights and begins warming up the room to a "comfortable level". Now... if I were being cynical, I would suggest that it would make sense for them to heat up the room just a little too hot so that suddenly that $22 bottle of Evian looked just a little more enticing...

This will never work. This is a classic example of technology applied to a problem that doesn't exist. These folks have obviously never run a hotel.
