Look At Me, I Can Fly

from the wow dept

I have a friend who is obsessed with Microsoft Flight Simulator. I wouldn't want to count the number of hours he logs on that thing flying from here to there all the time. It seems he's not the only one. Here's an article about a guy in New Zealand who has built a realistic cockpit in his garage to make the Flight Simulator experience even more realistic. He's actually working on a second cockpit which is almost finished as well. And, he's doing all this because he couldn't afford to continue his real flying lessons... You would think some of that money could have been put towards the lessons. Of course, there is still the part in the back of my brain saying "you know, a cockpit simulator in the garage is a pretty cool idea..."

    Costs are hugely disparate

You have to realize the cost difference between piecing together a sim cockpit for whatever $$$ and paying for flying lessons at $60+/hr. It takes at least 40, and usually more than 50 hours to get the license, and that's here in the states. Likely to cost even more in New Zealand.
