What's In A Product Name?

from the lawyers,-apparently dept

An interesting article in the NY Times (only for those of you who have registered) about the difficulty in naming a new product, like the iPod. The trouble, it appears, is all about trademarks, and the fact that every good name you can think of, someone else already "owns". There are some other product stories in there as well, such as the fact that the Palm Pilot was originally supposed to be called a "Taxi" until a last minute trademark problem. Of course, eventually Palm had to drop the Pilot name due to a trademark infringement suit from the Pilot pen company.
