Nationwide WiMax: $3 Billion
According to a new study, it would cost someone approximately $3 billion in equipment, towers and “ancillary costs” to deploy nationwide WiMax in the US. It’s not clear what’s included in those ancillary costs and whether or not the cost of spectrum is included, or if they’re simply assuming the use of unlicensed spectrum (which has its own set of problems). It also doesn’t seem to list labor or the cost of maintaining the network once its built or the cost of creating the backend necessary to provide services. No matter what, it should make it clear that we’re not going to have fifty startups showing up providing nationwide WiMax any time soon.
