It is shocking. Think of all the times you've read an article about a groundbreaking NASA satellite and someone always responds "Guys we are BROKE! No more playing around with learning stuff about the universe! We need to stop spending blah blah". 60 Billion is TEN James Webb telescopes (and that's the most expensive, state-of-the-art ever). It's 60 Chandra X-ray observatories (one of the 'great observatories' which is surpassed only by Hubble in revolutionizing our understanding of the Universe). It's funding for Hubble scientists (the thousands of people who use the instrument) for another six hundred years.
Re: Re: Wow! I guess the government schools don't want free speech.
Technically, Spain is in a death spiral because they elected a right-wing government that is pushing More Austerity!(TM) as the answer to a shrinking GDP because... because suffering is good? Honestly I don't know but it's an idiotic choice.
Re: Wow! I guess the government schools don't want free speech.
Fascism yes, the others, it depends. You can have a "Communist" regime that is fascist in nature (in which case the communism is usually window dressing), or you could have one that is not. Same with socialism. I wish people would understand this. YES Stalin, etc. were horrible times but it doesn't mean that e.g., a socialist democracy (where people vote for socialist policies) will be horribly fascist by rule.
Yes, the two points you mention have been repeatedly made, and at this point an airport or plane is in no more danger (arguably less) than any other collection of 100 - 300 individuals you might find anywhere.
There's money to be made in security theater though!
At this point, the troubling thing is that they're not even trying to claim this will prevent another 9/11. So by extension, any group of 100 - 300 people is open for TSA treatment: bus terminals, trains, stadiums, etc. Welcome to the police state. I put the over/under of looking like Brazil (the movie) at 2020.
Last I checked, we're actually doing approximately zero about that, so no, I don't think it qualifies. Constructive efforts against real threats is definitely not the idea. It needs to be nebulous, ill-defined, and never ending, by design.
Hey there poptech, you've got, what, 20 posts on this topic? Still wanna stick to that story that you're just a random joe who's upset about poor underdog Heartland out of the goodness of your truth-seeking heart?
You saw it on google news... after searching for Heartland References? Ain't exactly front-page news, kid. No one here believes that you aren't a shill for this company, and there ain't shit you can do about it. Whine away.
Do you every lie awake at night wondering why you sold your soul? Probably not. Go away.
Yeah, clearly it's a breeding ground for terrorism. I mean, just think of all the attacks in the last ten years as the internet has grown! The lives lost! The damage!
Wait, what? There's been no attacks and all arrests have been textbook entrapment cases of mentally ill people that were no credible threat before the FBI got to them? whaaat? CRAZY. I guess they're just lying then.
I certainly think the next administration will (Obama or not). They will say they are "temporarily taking it down to work on how to make it better" or some other lie and then it will never be seen again...
PS, I signed and posted to facebook. Come on, annoy all your friends!
It's so nice to see the hollywood trolls out in full force! I was worried they might have lost their jobs over the death SOPA and been replaced with more able competition. Have no fear, internet! Bumbling shills are still the norm!
I will only note that I am a long-time reader of CNN, mostly for the comments which I consider a barometer of the US public (sad as that sometimes reveals itself to be).
This was the one story where the most recent 25 comments were ALL UNANIMOUS, and against the government action taken today. I find that to be an interesting trend. I think the administration will find this was a serious mistake going forward.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I've already made up my mind
Amen! It might actually work if CNN, Fox, and MSN, as well as most newspapers were shut up for a year before the election. It's big media more than any one else that is to blame for the lesser-of-two-evils paradigm. Bleh.
