The FSF isn't demanding the removal of VLC from the app store. They are simply stating that Apple is distributing it with DRM which goes against the license that it is released under. Rather than comply with the license, Apple chose to just remove the app instead.
Time magazine is another "what the hell are they thinking?" $5 per issue on the ipad when they have a free iphone app. Seriously, is anyone going to consistently pay news stand price for a digital magazine?
Maybe I just don't understand regular people but I thought the only time people paid news stand price was when they were in an airport or somewhere where they needed to kill some time and then maybe they would pay that much for a single issue. But I don't see how anyone would pay that much every week for something they could get cheaper elsewhere.
I do use an ad blocker most of the time. I try to keep it disabled for sites that I frequently visit because I want to support them. I just temporarily disabled the ad blocker on ars and I saw multiple ads with text and graphics flying all over the ad trying to draw my attention to it. (Same thing on this site.) It is extremely annoying to me so I turned the ad blocking back on.
The topic of the contest was "Is it OK to download music, movies and games without paying?" so there were probably quite a few essay's out of the 80 submitted that had a similar view point. It isn't as surprising as if it were an open contest on any topic and this was the only one on piracy.
Could be similar to airline fees. One will try adding a new fee and then others will follow, it doesn't necessarily mean they are colluding to all increase and add fees.
@Derek, I agree to an extent, but it's just annoying that they charge extra for texts just because they consider it a different kind of data from the data I already pay for. Also, if there were any kind of regulation on text costs they would just add or increase some other fees to make up the difference.
"Most people who use SMS text messages on any sort of regular basis have bulk plans included with their regular plan."
That's because individual prices are so outrageous. Also, it is only "included with their regular plan" because they pay extra for it. I for one refuse to use text message. I have an Android phone and pay $30 a month for data, there is no reason I should have to pay more for the couple bytes of data in a text message.
