Warner Bros. Sets Up Korean Joint Venture With Telecom Carrier
Warner Bros. has taken its South Korean unit and set it up in a joint venture with operator SK Telecom and the record label it bought last year. SK Telecom wants to grab content for its wired and wireless broadband networks; Warner Bros. wants to grab a greater share of mobile music revenues, with South Koreans already spending twice as much on digital music as they do on traditional recordings. Warner Bros. CEO Edgar Bronfman also says the unit will be able to “experiment” with different distribution techniques, but given his fondness for DRM and his reticence towards digital music, will the unit come up with anything other than ways to get people to keep paying for the same content over and over?
