Penetration on the Rise

According to wireless industry tracker Telephia, the US has just over 50% wireless penetration in major metropolitan areas. There are pockets of the country with over 60% penetration. Greenville, South Carolina leads the country with 68% penetration. Other members of the over 60% club include Atlanta, St. Louis, Raleigh, N.C. , Orlando, Boston and Washington DC. This is great news for the industry in general. But it also means that carriers can expect to see less growth going forward. The real question is what’s keeping the other 40-50% away from wireless? I’m guessing the the biggest reason is cost. Which is OK. As I’ve said before, Wall Street and the industry need to focus less on growth from here on out and focus on churn, ARPU and profits. Probably in that order.
