…who run open-source computing environments (e.g., Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc.) can’t use this.

Dear Vendors: the people who are technically savvy enough to use open-source operating systems and applications are the SAME PEOPLE who are technically savvy enough to buy your products and services. You ought to be paying attention.

One of these sit next to each of my MythTV frontends. They’re kind of gimped (3 generations of kit to work up to being equal to an ancient ION) and limited but they’re cheap. Just like you don’t have to have one service to rule them all, you also don’t have to have a single device either.
