DailyDirt: Are You Smarter Than A Dolphin?

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

We may think we're pretty smart, but animals like dolphins are pretty smart too. For over 30 years, scientists have been trying to determine how smart dolphins really are. Bottlenose dolphins have a brain-to-body-weight ratio that is only second to humans, and they also have a very complex neocortex, the part of the brain that is responsible for traits typically associated with human intelligence, such as problem-solving and self-awareness. Researchers have even found that dolphins have von Economo neurons, which are associated with emotions, social cognition, and the ability to sense what others are thinking. Besides dolphins, people may be underestimating the intelligence of animals in general. Here are just a few links related to animal smarts. While humans may have trouble distinguishing between a "food growl" and a "stranger growl,"

that's funny as there is a doco going around where there has been a great deal of research into human / dog interaction and in it they recorded dogs making various barks, people who own dogs could tell the type of bark from the recording with almost 100% accuracy. It is very easy for humans to understand dogs body language and barks.

The doco also shows research that dogs have excellent skills in reading human body language and voice tone. The two combined shows that dogs have evolved along with humans and have formed a human / animal bond that only dogs and humans have.

I'm sure you would be able to find this doco on TPB, it would be nice if TD was accurate in anything it posts.. even the simple things.

the doco is called 'the secret life of the dog'
