DailyDirt: Getting Some Shuteye…
from the urls-we-dig-up dept
Sleep is a vital bodily function — even if no one knows exactly why we do it. There’s a lot of sleep research, but not a lot of solid answers for the origins of sleep. But that doesn’t mean we’re not learning cool stuff about sleeping all the time. Here are just a few tidbits of research on the topic of sleeping.
- Lucid dreaming can be induced with some brain stimulation. It’s not an exact science yet, but someday we won’t watch TV or play video games — we’ll wear lucid dream head gear and entertain ourselves while we sleep. [url]
- Blue light can signal your brain that it’s morning. Unfortunately, some artificial light sources (eg. iPads, smartphones) emit a lot of blue light, so when you use them just before bedtime… it can mess with your body’s sleep schedule. [url]
- According to a British study, there’s a correlation between taking a nap during the day — and dying before the age of 65. The causation isn’t clear, but if you take a lot of daytime naps…. [url]

I certainly am never going to wear lucid dreaming headgear as a replacement for shows and games unless I can alt-tab out of it as needed. It’s not like it would make the experience more immersive anyway; people have been using the power of imagination to totally immerse themselves in the worlds of others for centuries.
The few times I’ve managed to have lucid dreams, by realizing that I’m dreaming, I invariably wake up a few seconds later. Realizing that I’m dreaming seems to be an almost instant kill-switch for my dreams.
How do all these people take naps during the day? Perhaps if they had a job, they could afford better medical care and live longer.
