How Not To Deal With Information Leaks

While we're seeing plenty of companies claim to come clean about the various data leaks that have been getting so much attention lately, it appears they could do a much better job. One of the victims of the LexisNexis hacking explains how the company dealt with him by mainly claiming the hack was no big deal and not to worry about it at all. The company also never followed up with him to give him more details about the hack -- even after discovering the problems were much worse than they originally appeared. The writer points out that people know that leaks and security breaches are going to happen -- but the important thing is how the company's deal with them, and LexisNexis came up very short by (1) not keeping the victims clearly in the loop and (2) appearing to want to downplay the seriousness of the problem.
