Free VoIP (Bring Your Own Vo)

What if you threw a Superbowl party, but didn’t have any kind of TV at your home? You’ve got a cable feed, but no TV. Your friends could bring their own TV, and watch the game. Could you call that a Superbowl party? Towerstream, a wireless ISP using Aperto gear, is telling the press that they’re doing a free VoIP trial in NYC, except that they’re not providing any VoIP, but just the ‘IP’ part. Essentially, Towerstream is deploying WiFi access points, backhauled by their “pre-WiMAX” network, and inviting people to use whatever device you have (PDA or Laptop) and whatever VoIP client you already have (Vonage or Skype) to connect to the WiFi and make voice calls. Sounds to me like free WiFi. Now I like Towerstream’s business model, and I like free WiFi, but free WiFi is not a VoIP trial. Geez. I have an open AP at my house; does that mean I’m running a free VoIP trial?
