Samsung Edges Past Motorola In Unit Sales

After nipping at Motorola’s heels for some time, Samsung has finally tackled the second place spot from the Chicagoland handset maker, selling 22.98M handsets in the 3rd quarter of 2004 to Motorola’s 22.39M. That gives Samsung a 13.8% market share, still well behind leader Nokia who stopped its slide by bouncing slightly to 30.9%. Meanwhile, on the other side of Seoul, LG Electronics edged out SonyEricsson for the #5 spot with a 6.7% market share. Motorola, long accused of having boring terminals (how many cool phones have they had since the StarTac?) is expected to bounce back into the #2 slot because of two reasons: it has excess inventory in the channels which will probably be discounted, and they are finally starting to produce some exciting handsets, like the new Razr, which will be sold by Cingular. It should be fun to watch the competition as these two battle it out for the #2 spot…and as everyone tries to take a bite outta Nokia. Competition is good!
