Number Portability Moving Along

from the quieter-than-expected dept

Well, so far it appears that all the recommendations to people that they wait a little while before switching their mobile phone plans has worked. Despite Cingular’s little publicity stunt, the most notable thing about “number portability day” is that it appears to have been fairly quiet. I’m sure some horror stories will show up in the next few days, but the initial reports as we close out the first day was that business was brisk, but not overwhelming. Cingular claims their website went down for part of the day, but considering they’ve made sure to do everything possible to make the portability process as unpleasant as possible, that’s no surprise. The estimates right now are that approximately 100,000 people switched today – which is nowhere near some of the early predictions of over a million switchers.
