Is M2M The Next Big Money Maker In The Mobile World?

Well, it looks like we’ve found the “next big thing” to hype in the mobile world. Analysts are starting to come out with their usual “$xx billion in 5 years” predictions for “M2M” mobile connections. It’s not entirely clear what M2M connections are, but basically it’s that at least one end of the mobile connection isn’t to another person, but to a machine. So, it might be machine-to-machine, or it might be man-to-machine (what, no women allowed?). Basically, it’s just a catchy way for some analysts to say that mobile phones won’t just be used for communication, but also for monitoring and accessing data. I guess that doesn’t sound as sexy, though, and is unlikely to sell as many expensive reports.
