Email Is More Important Than The Phone In Business

from the changing-times dept

I was recently having a discussion on the difference between “phone people” and “email people” when it comes to business dealings. While I realize there’s a time and a place for both, I’m finding that I can get quite a lot done entirely over email – and I’m not the only one. A new study shows that people now rate email as the most important business communications tool over the phone. An astounding 80% of people surveyed prefered email to the phone, which sounds a bit high to me. 74% of respondents said losing their email would represent a bigger hardship than if they lost their phone service. People do switch to the phone, though, when it’s important to have a personal connection with the person you are dealing with. Other random findings included that the popularity of faxing is dropping rapidly thanks to email, while the popularity of instant messaging in the office is growing rapidly.
