It's AOL, But Is It Art?
from the get-over-it dept
For years there have been stories about the massive number of promotional CDs (and now DVDs) that AOL sends out trying to get you to sign up with them. For a while, the popular story was about the guys trying to get a bunch of them together to dump them on AOL’s doorstep. There are also stories about those collectors who search eBay for the amazing “rare” AOL discs. Well, now, here’s the story of the “artist” who uses AOL discs in his artwork. One of the pieces is a garbage can full of the damn platters. It’s scary just how deeply the idea of the AOL CD has permeated our society.

What would be better?
Would you rather have artists still stuck in a 1980s time warp, celebrating Andy Warhol’s cans of tomato soup?
In previous decades, intellectuals used to argue that electronic music is not “real” music, essays written on word processors are not “genuine”, even that true math or science is not done on computers. I’m all for progress.
