Pro Tip: If Your Game Gets Trashed In Reviews For Sucking, Don’t Blame It On ‘Woke Reviewers’

from the woke-or-broke? dept

There are lots of shitty ways game developers and publishers can handle their games getting crappy reviews. The best bet would obviously be to read the reviews from customers, learn something from them, and make a better product. Far too often, however, developers and publishers instead try to disappear bad reviews, fake reviews, or otherwise juice their review scores.

But then there’s the writer and director for Days Gone, John Garvin. Garvin stared at a wide swath of negative reviews for the game, most of which largely panned the game for being unoriginal, having a poor gameplay experience, and otherwise being all kinds of “meh.” Garvin then distilled this into an explanation for why the game was reviewed so poorly into the following list:

Three reasons:

1. it had tech issues like bugs, streaming and frame rate;
2. it had reviewers who couldn’t be bothered to actually play the game
3. And three, it had woke reviewers who couldn’t handle a gruff white biker looking at his date’s ass

Garvin wrote that in a now-deleted tweet. You will immediately notice that the list consists of two-thirds of blaming reviewers for the negative reviews. On the one hand, there is a certain amount of this that is understandable. After all, being a creative and having people you don’t know call your baby ugly is never a fun thing.

But that’s also something you sign up for when you release a creative work to the public. There’s no evidence presented by Garvin that reviewers hadn’t “bothered to actually play the game.” That statement is just made as though it’s expected to be taken as gospel. And the “woke reviewers” thing appears to be largely nonsense. There is a scene in the game that went semi-viral that consists of the player character following a female character. She bends over while asking if what she was looking at is what the player is looking for. He looks at her backside and basically says yes. It’s fairly dumb and a bit gross, but certainly nothing that the gaming public is going to lose its mind over. Were that the case, every GTA game would be completely panned by reviewers as well.

But because a certain segment of the population now seems to think you can shout “teh woke!” at any problem to make it not your fault, well, here we are. It’s a crappy way to run a game studio, frankly. If your customers are telling you what’s wrong with your product, that should be useful information to internalize and use for the future.

Or I guess you just blame the “woke,” and suddenly your product that is reviewed poorly and hasn’t sold particularly well is no longer your problem.

Re: Re:

That’s usually the case. I’ve seen bad reviews recently of Forza Horizon 5 because it’s “woke”. The reason? It allows people to choose a gender, pronoun and even prosthetics to customise a character that you don’t see for most of the gameplay. In a game that you can play 100% single player if you wish.

If the option to present yourself as something other than an able bodied cis white male (but allows you to present yourself as such also) causes you to get angry, the problem is likely not the game…

There is something to the idea though. Both being “woke” and not playing/watching/reading

There’s a long history of culture warriors blasting material without actual first hand experience.
Those same people tend to be upset about content that they disagree with.

I still strongly support a premise that dates back to the late 70s in entertainment.
If you don’t like it don’t buy it. And keep you morals to yourself.
If a digital dick or a digital arse makes you upset you have very serious personality issues. Get help.

Re: Re: Re:

What about LGBT+ representation, then?

Because being “woke” here also means, I dunno, ensuring that EVERYONE who isn’t a genocidal white supremacist ass and their supporters is treated like a human being?

And that also means giving that marginalized group a fighting chance to be themselves.

I’d also like to add that generally, conservatives are the ones screaming about how bad new things and trends are. And how much they HATE anything they steadfastly REFUSE to understand.

Yes, generally that is true.

But I’m sick and tired of people screaming about digital spurn and sex in entertainment and too violent or not wholesome or …
Fuck odd. If you don’t like it don’t consume it.
All too often reviews really are made by people who never consumed the product. Boycotts come from lack of knowledge
It’s all hypocrisy

Oh yeah, the late 70s. Where you could sexually, racially, or otherwise abuse anyone who didn’t conform, and you could reasonably be assassinated if you got too uppity.

“If you don’t like it don’t buy it. And keep you morals to yourself.”

In other words, “if you’re not a straight white cis male, you don’t have a voice!”

I wonder why that’s not popular now?

“a digital dick or a digital arse makes you upset you have very serious personality issues”

Isn’t that what you guys have right now? The “Twitter files” are basically a request for a surreptitiously obtained dick pic of Hunter Biden being removed from Twitter? Then you pretending that’s equal to $2 billion of Jared Kushner Saudi money in term so investigation?

LostInLoDOS (profile) says:

< Oh yeah, the late 70s… otherwise abuse anyone who didn’t conform, and you could reasonably be assassinated if you got too uppity.

I don’t know what fantasy you’re living in. There was no mass abuse or murder in the 70s. Who assassinated how many people. And if your only reply is name calling and words and vocal “abuse”, save it.

In other words, “if you’re not a straight white cis male, you don’t have a voice!”

Wow you have a major building on your shoulders. Forget chips.
Considering I’m not a straight white male you’re literally barking up the wrong tree. I was talking about horror/fantasy films, comics, rights of broadcast on cable, video games, music, culture.

Only thing I see, and said, about the twitter files is it shows clear political bias. Not once did I say it was criminal.

Then you pretending that’s equal to $2 billion of Jared Kushner Saudi money in term so investigation?

????? What does that have to do with anything. As far as I’m aware his investment venture is post advisory position.

The Catholic Church would probably beg to differ…if it would ever admit to such things, anyway. Also, plenty of sexual harassment, sexual assaults, and rapes happened in the ’70s—the difference between then and now is that those things weren’t taken as seriously then. (They largely aren’t now, at least by certain powerful segments of the population, but it’s still better now than it was then.)

Only thing I see, and said, about the twitter files is it shows clear political bias

Yeah, towards conservatives. I mean, what else would you call Twitter giving conservative users multiple chances to stop violating the TOS before finally giving them the boot, but booting liberal users after only one violation?

The Catholic Church would probably beg to differ…

The catholic church has been abusing people behind closed doors since shortly after its founding. What’s your point? Besides intentionally changing the subject of the topic.

The 70s and 80s were an important time for freedom of expression. From the final destruction of the comic code system, to indi film.
The same people who fought for the rights of expression today seek to suppress what they don’t like. The “church” isn’t what it coming down on artistic expression today in many cases.
I don’t complain because of what work culture or cancel culture attacks: I complain because they seek to damage expression.

I say the same to woke culture today I said to the church in the 80s! If you don’t like it don’t buy it. Shut up. Sod off.
Nobody consuming the product cares what you think.
I want body parts and giblets in my games and films. I want over sexualisation of both sexes and all genders.
If you have a problem with Tony’s dick, don’t play the game. If you don’t like the image of the time, don’t read the book. And if a bit of naked hot sweaty full frontal sex makes you uncomfortable, take your prude self back home.

See, way back in the early 2000s I made a public statement in multiple locations. The fastest way to end religious terrorism is to put their faith to the test. Be it Islam then or christian warriors today.
Both the bible and the quran (and most Abrahamic faiths) make clear.
Send in a bunch of strippers.
The men are required by faith law to pluck out their eyes. See how many actually do it. Film and show how many actually do it.

As plenty of other people have pointed out, plenty of other games with “gruff” white guys as lead protagonists have garnered critical acclaim, so it’s not as if the race of the main character is the issue. Plenty of other games with scenes similar to the one mentioned have also garnered critical acclaim; the Grand Theft Auto franchise is full of ’em, after all. The issues people had with Days Gone, from everything I’ve gathered, are:

  1. The protagonist is boring—not because he’s white, but because he’s poorly written.
  2. The gameplay is mediocre at best.
  3. The game itself dropped at a time when the industry had a glut of games with a Walking Dead–esque premise, which itself wasn’t exactly fresh at the time Days Gone dropped.

Nobody wants to admit they made something less than perfect. But if you’re going to respond to criticism of your work, being honest about the criticism is a far better approach than making shit up or blowing a minor criticism out of proportion.

Re:

Nobody wants to admit they made something less than perfect.

Everyone will just have different criteria for perfection.

If I claim that in this image, every pixel is correct, then there’s always counterargument that your specification which tells what is correct has been incorrectly designed.

But the counterargument for that is that I didn’t write the specification, and my perfection only depends on how far the implementation differs from that specific specification.

Thus if you compare the image to some other specification, there is no chance of finding a match and thus every project can be declared failure simply because you shifted your focus from the specification that the work was based on, to some completely different specification.

Thus every project that matches its original specification has been perfectly implemented, but at the same time it’s huge failure against other specs.

somehow I still haven’t even mentioned the reviews.

But now that you want to explore that area, internet’s review system is somewhat broken. Not only do they bash good products to the ground simply because it competes against some golden boys, but also they haven’t provided electricity safety standards with their review. Thus when we buy the product that they recommended, end result of electric shocks and burned computer equipment. But of course it’s more important if there’s single black pixel in the device’s screen.

So you’d sabotage your work

Implementing copyright correctly is world’s requirement to all authors, you can’t really call it sabotaging if someone actually does his best work while implementing that requirement.

It’s just that you’re too young to understand why that requirement is necessary. Your only idea for copyright is that it takes away something that rightfully belongs to you only and noone else. But the copyright as a global property is slightly more cunning.

With respect to their own actual work. There is no such requirement with respect to works of users,

This isn’t true. When you’re creating a platform for end user’s playground, it has stricter requirements than what is required for individual users.

For example, if the platform is helping end users violate other people’s copyrights, for example by creating derivative works, then platform owner is liable for “giving expicit instructions to infringe to direct infringer”… secondary infringement is also against the law

I have big problems understanding why is this “stop user infringing” not 100% required, if the software is meant for young people like children and teenagers? There isn’t viable logic which does not force implementing this requirement.

All I can think that you’re a criminal and want to sabotage other people’s software.

4) zoom level jumps in viewer should depend on the distance
5) clearcoat gltf extension not implemented
6) govt clicked lateral ischemia for me
7) it’s not possible to open obj/mtl/stl files from within zip files
8) gltf basecolor without textures are working badly

i.e. still tons of stuff to do.

It’s one thing if the client is being vague. This is a known issue regardless of profession, and software development and game development are no different.

It’s a second thing if the client demands you provide a solution to copyright infrongement. Denuvo amd its ilk have been known to cripple software but that’s not on the devs, that’s on the client.

It IS another matter altogether if you put your horrible, genocidal beliefs above the client’s demands. It is highly unsurprising the Shame of Finland failed to get his project approved by the Finnish government. Because I am pretty sure he NEVER listened to his clients at all.

It’s one thing to get your requirements from the trolls on internet. It’s known to contain dangerous, misleading and illegal requirements and any of the ways to obtain internet’s opinion are no better in this respect.

It’s a second thing if the internet trolls are trying to push some impossible requirements to your software just to make sure you never progress with your project. Moon walk without nasa’s help kind of problems.

It is another matter if the internet trolls actually want to remove important safety requirements which are implementing government’s important stuff. Internet thinks copyright rules are not valid requirements and they want to remove those “artificial limitations” from all software and enable their piracy use cases.

Anonymous Coward says:

This isn’t true. standard file format support was originally determined to be significant copyright problem, but markets/internet trolls kept demanding the implementation of .obj, .stl, .gltf, .glb and .zip file support and I listened the clients and implemented it even though they’re risky copyright-wise.

Given that you didn’t even bother to check the software far enough that you can get a cube to the screen, it’s unlikely that you’d have found out exactly where such crippling is happening. Thus you are in no position to complain about it.

More to the point – there wasn’t any other choice for the most part until recently. For every Lara Croft, there were 100 white guys. Most of the complaints seem to stem from letting people choose something else than a Rambo stereotype and a BSDM clad female they can ogle at.

Which is fine. If you want to play as a caucasian meathead, most games still allow you to do that, but other choices are now available.

“The game itself dropped at a time when the industry had a glut of games with a Walking Dead–esque premise, which itself wasn’t exactly fresh at the time Days Gone dropped.”

Any problems are likely down to this. If you want to kill zombies, there’s no end of choices, and some of the alternatives are just better. I’ve not played this particular game myself, but I don’t get the idea that I’m missing out on some lost classic. Fair play to those who like it, but I’m guessing I can think about some zombie games that hit better (or even biker games)

Put me in the minority, then

I’ll admit, I passed on this game initially, but I ended up receiving it as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago.

I dunno, maybe I just have crap taste in games, but I absolutely loved Days Gone. I thought the story was decent and the zombie hordes/mobs were appropriately rabid, tenacious, and panic-inducing. But the thing I liked probably more than anything else, were the subtle nuances in the facial animations. There were a number of scenes where the the facial expressions and overall body language of main character, Deacon, were just spot-on. Enough that the moments actually stood out to me as such.

Also, the song during the mid-game area transition, “Hell or High Water” by Billy Raffoul remains one of my favorites today.

There aren’t many games I’ve played through twice, but Days Gone was one of ’em and I’ll likely replay it again some five years or so from now.

So, “woke reviewers” or John Garvin’s shitty responses to negative reviews aside, I enjoyed the hell out of it.

David says:

The problem with salacious humor...

For me the main problem with indecent humor is that, well, humor is hard and the indecency is a distraction to the joker.

As a food analogy (we cannot always have car analogies for environmental reasons), I am desensitivized to hotness. I mean, pungency. I put habaneros and similar in my food. Or taste them undiluted.

Problem is that there is no real overlap between food where I enjoy the pungency and food others can still eat.

So people think that what it takes to make me enjoy food is throwing in something hot until it becomes inedible.

Problem is that I don’t enjoy the powdery taste of too much cayenne pepper or the bland hotness of (very) hot Thai chili peppers.

When people cannot properly season because the pungency blinds them to everything else, they tend to produce stuff that is not really savory, just pungent.

And that’s similar with salacious humor. Because a lot of people are unable to focus on anything but the salacity, they tend to underwhelm in the “humor” department.

So the results tend to better if they don’t even try with salacity. Because then they are less likely to end up a complete failure in the humor department, simply because they’ll try harder.

I’ll add salacious elements according to my own fantasy. As Tom Lehrer aptly remarked, filth is in the mind of the beholder.

This never happens for a reason. When you get your first access to the work, the programmers/managers/employees have already flown to different project and they’re working their next title. Software projects are always like this, the initial work when you can actually change the featureset that is available in the game is done maybe 3 years before their first customer release.

Yes. Companies are having difficulties with the trolls on internet. I wouldn’t have guessed. It’s no wonder that releasing some trivial piece of software takes over 3 years. In the real world, there’s a balance between different requirements, such as usability, security, stability, intuitiveness, portability and compatibility.

In your case, you seem to be claiming that you sacrificed everything for efficient, stable code. Which is fine, but if nobody either uses it or can even work out the UI when you present it to them it will fail.

The situation with our UI design is still significantly better than that of our competitors like blender or maya, which are famous for horrible user interface.

The real problem is that when the software gets more complicated and more flexible, the user interface design suffers as a result of that complexity. So users think that blender is complicated for a reason.

But then we come and blow up their theory, when we can do the same complexity 3d models, but without horrible user interface where let/right mouse buttons works wrong…

Blender Interface can changed to give the mouse actions you want, and here is the thing, a few minutes on YouTube will show you haw that, and many other things in Blender are done. Blender will always have a complex Interface, due to the number of tools that it supports, and it ability to be extended via various optional modules.

Youtube videos are not acceptable here, given that blender didn’t invent the technology, but it was created by google. If they had been awake in their copyright lessons, you’re not going to get points for using someone else’s technology. If they can create cool animations, they should do it in their own tech, instead of just “recording” them as youtube videos. Noone wants to see old tech like youtube videos raped to display blender’s animations. The idea is to get better quality than what is possible with youtube videos, and not just replicate someone else’s technology.

I learned this practise when some food delivery company (called wolt) used fresh new scooters from company called tier. Supposedly the company had no permission to use the scooters for their food delivery business without proper business license. Ordinary end user licenses to the scooters are not giving permission to run a business on top of the scooter service, as it removes scooter availability from ordinary scooter users.

And this “using youtube to promote blender” is in similar kind of problems.

There was a time when “woke” meant something specific. Which was usually just “someone aware of prejudice”.

That time’s passed. It’s now just another buzzword that serves no purpose other than to indicate that the person using it doesn’t understand major concepts and wants to pretend there’s a new “other” trying to block them from something.

It’s now just another tool in the “culture war” that’s used to try and deflect from real issue and to denigrate the populations that would benefit from more awareness of how they are diminished in the overall culture. Very sad.

They’re the same thing. Term that used to mean something, turned against someone to “other” them and pretend that nothing they say has real meaning.

The main benefit remains the same – if someone throws it out as an epithet with no other context, you can probably ignore them or at least guess where they get their talking points from.
