School Freaked Out That Students Might Use Mobile Phones To View Porn

from the if-it-were-a-magazine? dept

If a kid came into school with a pornographic magazine and showed it to a few friends, it’s likely that (assuming he was caught), the child would face some sort of well-deserved punishment for bringing inappropriate materials into school. It’s pretty likely that such a scenario has happened for years. I have vague recollections of exactly that happening to a friend back when I was in school. It certainly didn’t merit a big newspaper article about it happening. In fact, I can’t even remember the details of when, who, where or how. However, throw in a bit of new technology, and suddenly “it’s news!” It appears that a kid in Australia came into school with a mobile phone that contained a pornographic image. Inappropriate, certainly. Something that should be discussed with the child (and his parents), absolutely. But, is it really “a wake-up call” to the school that required a letter from the principal to the parents of 123 children warning them that their kids “may have come into contact” with a child holding a mobile phone with a tiny photo of a naked person? The article seems to focus so much on the technology as the issue, rather than the pornographic image — which is the sort of thinking that leads people to overreact against the technology, rather than focus on the actual issue.

Destructive Potential

Yes, what if kids take pictures of other students in locker rooms, and spread it around the school? The destructive potential is great.

I avoided Starbucks this morning and got coffee at a gas station. It turned out to be across the street from a Catholic school, so there were schoolgirls in their uniforms there, obviously the bad apples. Imagine the blackmail potential it these bimbettes started taking pictures of weaker students.

Goeff says:

Re: Re: Destructive Potential

Consider that the comemnter said that the girls at the station were “obviously” the bad apples. Something in their appearance is more afactor of that consideration than WHERE they were. Did you ever get a sense of the virue of a person by nature of their appearance and demeanor. Sure, you’ll say don’t judge, most hypocrites do, but we can tell alot about individuals by how they behave when their parents are not around.

Re: Destructive Potential

Congrats on avoiding ‘fivebucks’ this morning. it is a start. Keep it up…

Um why are students who go to gas stations ‘bad apples’ and ‘bimbettes’? Was this during school or before school starts? I know that growing up, I would occasionally go the the service station next to my school for a soft drink or something of the like. But then again I didn’t wear a schoolgirl uniform till after the second divorce..

(I was kidding on parts of that, I will leave it to you to decide which parts. Cheers)

Re: opinions

Please read the full article before posting comments. The author was merely suggesting that if a child were caught sharing pornography at school, that there ought to be consequenses for that inappropriate behavior. It is a legal fact of our society that there are punishments for not obeying the law and children under the age of 18 in the USA are not legally permitted to purchase pronography. By association, those same individuals also should not be in posession of such materials, especially in public schools.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Re: opinions

Todd, you are correct that you can’t purchase pron if you’re under 18. however, i don’t believe the law stipulates you can’t posess porn if you are under the age of 18. it’s like cigarettes. if you’re under 18, you can’t buy them. however you can still smoke them, if you got ahold of them. however it is illegal to SUPPLY cigs to underagers, but….that’s something different.

like it’s not illegal to get high. it is illegal to posess drugs and drug paraphnalia (my spelling is off, don’t sue me)

so, yeah….it’s all a matter of context.

Better yet lets outlaw kids….Think about it. No whining little brats at restaurants, no mothers yelling across a crowded stores at their rampaging hellspawn, no kids for child mollesters to mollest, no drain on the tax base to provide the little plague carriers with an education….its a win win.

OR

We could accept that fact that kids are curious about sexuality because it’s ingrained in our DNA for purposes of procriating the species. Just because we have evolved in a manner in which we can supress our animalistic nature does not mean that we should ignore the fact that it is such.

A mere 50 years ago my granmother married my grandfather at the age of 15 years old. In the majority of the world this is still common place. 50 years of repression can not overcome billions of years of evolution, it just ain’t gonna happen.

Perhaps, the vast majority of the social problems in the ‘western world’ would go away if over active puritian would mind their own friggan business.

If you can come up wirth a new device that can display an image, a smart teen will figure out how to get porn on it, I guaran-effin-tee it. Challenge…..Go check your son’s video Ipod or related piece of technology, Palma-sutra anyone? Palm pilots, video Ipods and the like…I guarantee that you will be suprised at what you will find. Is it the technology’s fault? NO, You bought it for them, and you didn’t and cannot raise them any better. It is your fault for failing as parents..Accept it for what it is, no more, but no less either. Look, they are just doing what comes natural…

Jersey204 says:

Re: Re: Who to blame? Technology???

You are absolutely correct in stating that kids listen to their friends and peers over their parents; however, the issue is not, “who to blame.” The issue is that technology, once again, is taking the fall in an issue where a new medium has nothing to do with the problem: a kid had a little porn picture in school. Inappropriate, sure… but I can think of a lot worse things. This is part of growing up. Kids learn when and where things are appropriate. Personally, I can’t wait for the day when I can view a live donkey show via my cell phone, save it to a memory card, and transfer it to a 74 in HD flatscreen in order to show my kid what is really deemed inappropriate.

Keybored says:

It's a toy

A cell phone in a kid’s hand is just another toy. They’re not allowed to bring toys to school. Leave the cell home or zipped up in the backpac for after school use.

The principle should not have a letter home to each parent for somthing as stupid as this. Detention forthe kid? sure but dumbass educators who keep over reacting is to small shit is a big problem (in my opinion)

Cells phones are Illegal in Alabama

It is against the law to have a Cell phone on a school campus in Alabama, that includes Students, Parents, and Teachers. I know my daughter, who had to walk 2 miles to school because we lived 1 block inside the no bus zone, got suspended for having a cell phone with her in school. She wasn’t even using, they did a bag search and found it. I went round and round with the Principle and the school board to no avail and was told that not even the parents could bring a cell phone on to the school grounds. Thats when I nailed the prinicple and three teachers for having cell phones on their hips and dared them to do something about me carrying my cell phone. They treatened to have me arrested, to bad they didn’t go through with it, you might have had another blog to discuss. Needless to say, we pulled out daughter out of the horrible public school system in Alabama.

Just so you know, Cell Phones are Illegal in Alabama.

DAMN THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY!!!

Cell Phones will bring the destruction of mankind!

Seriously kids with cell phones is no big deal. Schools having rules about not using them in class is ok as well. While I was in college I did find it quite annoying hearing someones cell phone ring while in class and those students actually answered it! Well alot of teachers began telling the students to leave the class and not come back for the rest of class.

Kids and adults both alike have no manners or ettiquette when it comes to cell phones.

Here is a place to start, because well all know Bill is a God and Microsoft is never wrong 🙂 lol

Now this, is News

I am so sick of this crap, World War III could start any day and everyone is worried about some kid seeing a naked person or looking at porn in school. Give me a damn break. It’s crap like this that makes terrorists and other important things in the real world take a back seat and then cause real problems, because they have time to think of ways to kill people and do other evil acts while we are worried about some kid watching Deepthroat in class. As now there will be 24/7 news alerts about how some 16 year old was caught watching porn in Sex Ed class, cause it was more informative then the class was he was in, and now how its corrupted the country, and how all kids with cell phones are going to become rapists and murders, obviously, We have came around a bit here in my good old USA from the Puritans ways and thoughts, but we are still so hung up over that seeing a nude person or seeing 2 people go at it, that we think its going to turn us all into rapist and killers. While 99% of all the people that are killing and raping people in this world now have not even seen a pornographic Movie or look at “Dirty Pictures”. This is just another way of trying to stir shit up, and that’s what it is, it’s shit. And it will take us all away from real problems in the world, but then again this is what sells, so that’s what’s going to be told. BTW this article was about school kids viewing porn in school not about kids blackmailing people with images or anything else, like all conversations its got off the main subject and turned into something totally different, But that’s the human way, Isn’t it? As with every kid before us and after us, we all want to do that we are not supposed to do, and as long as everyone brings it out in the open and keeps talking about it the more reports you will see that kids are doing this, because they will only do it because everyone says you are not, if this shit wasn’t made into a big public national event, it would be almost non existent, You are always going to have some, But now it will become a “National Epidemic”, and will be on “The Quack Phill show” and the cover of USA TODAY so we can cause a bigger problem, It is so everyone can make money off it. That’s the bottom line. IF it’s not a problem make it into one, that’s our American way. We are all hypocrites, me and everyone else is in some way or another!

Lantern Bearer says:

The biggest thing to happen at my highschool in 1963 was the display of Jimbo-“The Coochie King’s 1952 Buick back seat on which there was a big stain from his exertions with a young woman who had there-to-fore not experienced any intrusive intromissions of the male kind.

The first day of display was treated by school officials as just another automobile viewing, but by the second day the full story was out and Jimbo was not allowed to park his, now shrine-like Buick, within sight of the school. There was adult talk of how destructive of morals that automotive technology had become in the hands of the young. “Somebody oughta do somethin’.”

Jimbo turned 18 while still in his Sophomore year and was soon on his way to basic trainning.

My youngest daughter just recently paid me the last $500 dollars she owed me for a $3000 Cellular porn media content bill. If she ever gets another cell phone account she will have to marry into it.

No One Knows says:

Give me a second to climb up on my soap box here. This whole issue arose from a sexual harassment lawsuit filed on a auto service shop mechanic several decades ago. A customer noticed a auto parts calendar in the mechanics tool box and filed a protest. The customer won the suite despite the fact it was located in a privet tool box in a restricted area. This made the news. Once the pretense was set more people set out looking for business to file suit and make a lot of moneys on something that has been excepted as normal since man took up the wrench to make a living. To date no one is safe. If some one shows up with material or does anything some one else could consider distasteful or obscene, that business or organization is liable. (Remember in one culture or another, anything and everything can be is considered highly obscene.) So in today’s Lawsuit happy world it should not be surprising that the schools are shaking in their boots over what kids may bring into school. When it comes to kids, parents are quick to blame anyone else for their personal parental shortcomings. And they will find plenty of lawyers and politicians who will agree with them.

Sanguine Dream says:

Re: Re:

Well of course. What better way is there to “think of the children” than to take a relatively small issue and blow it up into a national emergency?

And the calendar in the above example, talk about double standard. Does this mean that as an agnostic if I walk into an auto repair shop and one of the workers has on a shirt that says, “All agnostics are evil” and the Christian cross on the background I can sue? I could try but all of a sudden that worker’s shirt is freedom of expression because no lawyer or politician would have the balls/ovaries to stand up to the almighty church. Now back to you regularly scheduled topic.

Lay Person says:

Once again...

Once again…technology is to blame and not the parents or the student.

Parents, understand the technology you give your kids. Be certain the kids understand that actions and choices have consequences, sometimes undesired ones.

Once a choice is made, be accountable for it, for better or worse. Be a responsible human being and own your choices and actions.

Does technology really sensationalize?

Does technology really make this story more exciting for the journalists, editors and end readers? As this post mentions, a pornographic magazine would certainly not make the news — what difference does it make if it’s an electronic image or not.

Protectionism is also not the answer. Trying to shelter your children from every possible ‘evil’ in the world is not going to make them stronger and more resilient, it’s going to make them weaker. Here’s a different idea: talk to your kids about the things that make you uncomfortable — discussing things can make you both feel better about it.

Joe says:

better yet, just teach your kids that nudity is somthing to be loved. love in private, but still loved. give em a cell phone, and actually look at it once in a while. and btw, cellphone porn is not the problem. ipod video, video porn is the problem. i pods are banned at the highschool i went to, and i took mine every day, so did half my teachers, and most of my friends.

Just an afterthought.

I honestly think it’s pathetic that people worry about this shit… Your going to make a piece of porn on a phone a national or world-wide crisis… How lame is everyone becoming? Like they can’t go on the Internet and see it all day? Are you kidding me? We honestly think that parental blocks stop them from viewing porn? Listen all you looking for a reason to be heard simpletons. If you say we have a restricted site filter on our net, it’s easy to DL another browser, and trust me the 6 yr old that my Gf babysat knew how to do that, they are smarter than we think. So you find a way to block something and they’ll find a way to get access even faster… It’s our nature and it will never end, I think it started from Adam and Eve when the ate from the forbidden fruit .. We want what we can’t have period. Now as for the George Bush blamers. Everything in this world is his fault right. Wrong… Is it his fault that Korea wants to launch missiles, is it his fault that Saddam Gassed thousands of people cause someone tried to off him? Or is it George W’s fault that some retards that wear trench coats and males with black nail polish and vampire teeth decided to shoot up a whole school?

I’ve learn one thing in my 26 years on this earth. Everyone wants to blame everything on someone else, it’s never their faults it’s never going to be and everyone is perfect. So saying that and to not be hypocrites if we all think that nothing is our faults and we are perfect, George W. Bush is a saint and he’s doing the world a favor by ridding us of all that scum. And if you say I’m just saying that cause I don’t have to fight out there, I did 3 tours with the Army there… Thank you… I’ll be here all week.

We were attacked because our foreign policy is simply self serving. If it’s selfsrving we have tyo expect to be attacked.

This has absolutly nothing to do with what everyone is being fed as the truth. Truth is we asked for ourselves to be attacked. We asked to be dragged in the middleeast conflict. We are as guilty as anything Israel has done to date.

You have alot to learn…

I dont know where you get your news, but your way off base like most of the folks in the country…

Bush’s foreign policy has about as much to do with 9-11, or any other war involving the middle east as the Queen of England has to do with the price of this laptop I’m typing on….(yeah…jack shit).

Bin Laden made it clear in his letter to America that it (911) was more Bill Clinton’s fault than Bush…

“””Who can forget your President Clinton’s immoral acts committed in the official Oval office? After that you did not even bring him to account, other than that he ‘made a mistake’, after which everything passed with no punishment. Is there a worse kind of event for which your name will go down in history and remembered by nations?”””

Do a Google search some time for Osama letter to America…

Its been found to be authentic…

And theres alot more there to read!!!

I guess your gonna say the Crusades somehow had to also do with Bush’s policies…

whatever….

learn history…

There has never been peace in the Middle East….

I wonder why?

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.

Islam’s “holy” book teaches bluntly to kill infadels…

As you can see in Binladens letter we (the U.S.) are the “Great Satan” ( go read the letter)

So….hmmmm, I wonder why the violence, ITS NOT BECAUSE OF BUSHS FOREIGN POLICY!!!

Its because we are infadels according to the Quran.

Its that plain, and that simple.
