Latest Idea On Stopping Illegal Immigrants: Crowdsourcing

from the just-doing-my-job-on-the-border-patrol dept

Apparently Texas Governor Rick Perry is a Wired magazine subscriber, as his latest proposal for “securing” the state’s border with Mexico relies on crowdsourcing. He wants to install webcams along the 1,200-mile border and broadcast them live online, so anybody can monitor them and call in suspicious activity to the authorities. It’s another take on the neighborhood watch for the internet age, only instead of local busybodies sticking their noses into their neighbors’ business, they can now generate their feelings of self-importance from thinking they’re helping protect the nation’s borders. It’s hard to see the program being very effective, and it sounds like little more than election-year grandstanding (announced by Perry on the eve of the state’s Republican convention), but it does point to the possibilities the internet can offer in overhauling some labor-intensive tasks. In any case, it’s probably a good thing Texas has banned online hunting, lest any overzealous politicans get any more bright ideas.

LET'S BE TRUTHFUL

The White Congress and big White corporations do not want brown people illlegal or otherwise, period.

Protecting the border? From what? Mexicans flying planes into buildings? I think they rather clean them than destroy them.

The world doesn’t hate America, The world hates the Bush Family.

Re: LET'S BE TRUTHFUL

Are you blind? You must be if you think that White corporations “Don’t want brown people”. Just look at our outsourcing probem.

We need to protect our borders against illegal aliens who DONT pay taxes and who TAKE our welfare money.

I feel that anyone who is illegaly in America should be promptly removed from the country. It’s the right thing to do. If you steal, you go to jail, if you kill someone, you go to jail or die. If you break the law, then you need to be punished accordingly.

I don’t have a problem with hispanic people, at all. I have a problem with people taking from our country and not giving anything back.

Hey Red (post #9),

I guess everyone but Native Americans have to leave by your standards. Let’s all leave because we had no right to come here in the first place.

And what’s this about “taking from our country and not giving anything back”? They give plenty back… have you or do you know anyone who has had landscaping or construction work done? There’s a good chance that the hard working individuals were Mexican, and there’s a better chance that they were getting paid a lot less than any white guy doing the same job. If you ask me, that’s giving back.

Red says:

Re: Re: Re: LET'S BE TRUTHFUL

Hey Paul Smith, we faught and killed for our country.

I hate it when people always think that “we should leave the country” because we werent the first people to inhabit it. I would just like to say to you people to shut the fuck up! We conquered America. It’s not like the Native Americans didn’t fight back.

And illegal immigrants don’t give much back to our country. Younger Americans who are legally in the country could take up some of the labor intensive jobs that don’t require much skill. And there are plenty of other people who have the skill in America to do contruction and things like that. I see PLENTY of white people and people who are legally in this country living on the streets. I have NEVER seen a Mexican living on the streets.

Re: Re: Re: LET'S BE TRUTHFUL

I agree with you all the way. If you were to take all the Mexicans out everyone would be crying. Because who is going to build their houses cheaper who is going to do cheaper labor for them. So all those people who are against illegal immigrants I don’t want you guys to ever have any Mexican do work for you, because most likely many people do because they are cheaper. So people need to stop saying things if they are going to be paying the illegal immigrants to work for them.

give the racism a rest. these illegals are an enormous financial burden to bear.

“Protecting the border? From what? Mexicans flying planes into buildings? I think they rather clean them than destroy them.”

protecting the border from future hijackers. where do you think they came from? pick up a newspaper.

“The world doesn’t hate America, The world hates the Bush Family.”

put fahrenheit 9/11 on pause for a second and wake the fuck up. america is hated, but we aren’t the only ones. not everything about the government is a conspiracy, or evil. however, they are allowing criminals to enter the country by the millions.

your comments are ignorant. it makes me wonder where they come from. are you an illegal immigrant? have you been fired from a job by a rich white company? or are you just a moron?

Re: LET'S BE TRUTHFUL

“The White Congress and big White corporations do not want brown people illegal or otherwise, period.”

Wow! That is remarkably ignorant and – well, racist. There are a few rednecks who find any issue to promote their racist views, but this is not one of them. This has nothing to do with the color of someones skin. This is about an ILLEGAL activity. People of any culture/race/creed who ILLEGALY reside in the USofA should be punished. When you come into a country ILLEGALLY (or stay beyond a visas expiration) and then commit IDENTITY THEFT to get a job and then commit another crime by not paying taxes or improperly paying taxes – you do not belong in the Country – you belong in jail. The porous border is a blow off valve for Mexico’s problems – as long as they can continue to come here they will never deal with the problems in their own country and it will continue to devolve into a more and more corrupt cesspool. (This of course is not limited to Mexico – it’s just that a majority of illegals are from there.) We need to A.) Lock down the border [North and South] to illegals B.) Increase the ability for legal, law abiding citizens from other countries to come here LEGALLY. The people that are here ILLEGALY – if they are caught they should be punished according to the LAW for all of their crimes. If they want to be here they should go home and get in line with the LAW ABIDING people already doing it the right way. LEGAL immigrants are always welcome here.

Black Prosecutor says:

Re: LET'S BE TRUTHFUL

Wow another racist posting. I can’t wait for 2030 when ‘White’ people achieve minority status. Then I can prosecute jackasses like you for hate crimes.

Better get off your ‘hate whitey’ pity-pony now because math doesn’t lie and their minority status is coming.

Oh and the sooner you stop lumping people into behavior categories based on the color of their skin the sooner you’ll become a productive member of society.

Comments like this is why people hate Americans. Where do you live son? And what color are you?

ANYONE who wants to come here should. Just do it legally. wait in line like the rest of the immigrants. Don’t forget unless YOU are an American Indian YOU are an immigrant too. White, brown, green….whatever.

We as legal Americans pay taxes. They do not. Get it??

What exactly is a Big White Corporation? I would LOVE for you to name a few.

Ok this is stupid. These are people we are talking about not animals. Yeah are you going to think it is so funny if it was your family your little child that fell in there. I don’t think so. These people have families too just like you. Just think of it that way. They are not coming over here to make our life’s difficult they only come to better themselves.

Mr. Whiteguy says:

No Mexican = No cheap labor!

The other day I went to look at my sister’s new home being built. The dam thing was being built by Mexicans! As we left her gated development I noticed the gardeners were all Mexican. We went to lunch at Pick up Stix and saw All Mexican cooks.

Dam, if we kick these bastards out of here who is going to do their work? If Americans do it will they demand more money?

I say we let well enough alone. Unless you have extra cash burning a hole in your pocket that is.

Wolfger (profile) says:

Re: No Mexican = No cheap labor!

If you *don’t* have extra money, maybe you need to worry about illegal immigration even more. These people are taking jobs away from Americans who need them. And it’s not that the Americans would “demand” more money… they would likely get minimum wage. Places that hire illegals do so because they can pay illegally low wages to them with no fear of being caught (because illegals will not report them). If you want to be in this country so badly, do it *legally*, like my friend did.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: No Mexican = No cheap labor!

That is easy to say if your not a small business trying to compete against them. They pay no taxes there standard of living is different than mine i cant help that they were born
in a country with no plumbing. They are hard workers but americans or at least some are now lets see maybe we could make welfare recipients earn the checks our country gives them!!!!!

AcidOsmosis says:

Leave well enough alone? I supposed you love the idea of illegal immigrants stealing 2 million jobs that legal America born citizens should have a fair shot at? I suppose you agree with thousands of large businesses moving overseas, ousting Americans from their jobs, just so that company can wrack in even more profit when their CEO’s make more than the President of the United States.

Some of you people on the Internet make me sick, then again, those of you that make me sick are Americans and you fellow Americans are the exact reason were in the mess were in. It’s not the President’s fault. Who voted for him? It’s not Mexican’s fault they are allowed over the border and provided with low cost, tax-exempt lives in American. It’s our fault because we are the ones that allow it and we are the ones that turn a cheek and say “it’s not my job”, “someone else will fix it”, “I can’t make a difference”.

Pathetic we all are. We complain about so much yet do nothing.

A. Kohler (user link) says:

Re: Outsourcing Woes

Who did vote for Bush? No one I know. If you want someone to take the blame, point the finger at Middle America: the people that elect intolerent facists who know nothing about economics or anything else. I don’t think that finger pointing does any good, though.

As for the Mexicans, most of them take jobs that even the poorest of Americans don’t want. Although I agree that high-level corporate greed and corruption is way out of control, that was the case long before the current “outsourcing movement”. We, as a nation, are going to have to accept the fact that the global economy has changed, and we have to change with it. My business is moving from providing services to businesses to providing servicing to businesses that provide services to bussinesses (i.e. outsourcers).

As for complaining, have you complained to your Congressional representatives, lately? That can be more effective than ranting on techdirt.

What jobs are Mexicans taking that any American would want to do?. What? Are you going to tell me you didn’t graduate high school because you got knocked up or you failed because you chose to go drinking every night instead of studying? Are you going to tell me your grades were’nt good enough to go to college even though high school was given to you free of charge? So because your lazy ass couldn’t pass your finals you want to blame the Mexican for taking that low paying toilet cleaning job you wish you could have? Give me a break. There are no excuses folks. No American should be in competition of a low wage job; all of us should be working in at a professional level. Personally, I am happy they are willing to to the back breaking work, that way, I won’t have to do it EVER!

Thanks for listening.

Not That Bad Of An Idea

I don’t think the camera thing is that bad of an idea. Plenty of people were willing to drive hundreds of miles and walk those borders themselves to try to stop illegal immigrants. Why wouldn’t they be willing to stay at home and watch from there? This will proabbly never come about but it could help a little. I doubt it would stop things completely but the more eyes the better. I have no problems with immigrants as both sets of my grandparents weren’t born in this country. I have a problem with illegal border crossing sure its mostly mexicans looking for work. The problem is there are also drug runners and gun runners making the trek across as well. Our borders need to be secure but we also need easier plans for people to get work visas. That way we don’t lose a huge chunk of our work force

Patriot says:

Americans being

The following from Tom O’Malley, who was a Director with SW BELL in Mexico City.

You remember I spent five years working in Mexico.

I worked under a tourist Visa for three months and could legally renew it for three more months. After that you were working Illegally. I was technically illegal for three weeks waiting on the FM3 approval

During that six months our Mexican and US Attorneys were working to secure a permanent work visa called a FM3. It was in addition to my US passport that I had to show each time I entered and left the country Barbara’s was the same except hers did not permit her to work.

To apply for the FM3 I needed to submit the following notarized originals

(not copies) of my:

1. Birth certificate for Barbara and I.

2. Marriage certificate.

3. High school transcripts and proof of graduation.

4. College transcripts for every college I attended and proof of graduation.

5. Two letters of recommendation from supervisors I had worked for at least one year.

6. A letter from The ST. Louis Chief of Police indication I had no arrest record in the US and no outstanding warrants and was “a citizen in good standing.”

7. Finally; I had to write a letter about myself that clearly stated why there was no Mexican Citizen with my skills and why my skills were important to Mexico. We called it our “I am the greatest person on Earth” letter. It was fun to write.

All of the above were in English that had to be translated into Spanish and be certified as legal translations and our signatures notarized. It produced a folder about 1.5 inches thick with English on the left side and Spanish on the right.

Once they were completed Barbara and I spent about five hours accompanied by a Mexican Attorney touring Mexican Government office locations and being photographed and fingerprinted at least three times. At each location and we remember at least four locations we instructed on Mexican tax, labor, housing, and criminal law and that we were required to obey their laws or face the consequences. We could not protest any of the Governments actions or we would be committing a felony. We paid out four thousand dollars in fees and bribes to complete the process. When this was done we could legally bring in ourhousehold goods that were held by US customs in Laredo, Texas. This meant we had rented furniture in Mexico while awaiting our goods. There were extensive fees involved here that the company paid.

We could not buy a home and were required to rent at very high rates and under contract and compliance with Mexican law.

We were required to get a Mexican drivers license. This was an amazing process. The company arranged for the Licensing agency to come to our Headquarters location with their photography and finger print equipment and the laminating machine. We showed our US license, were photographed and fingerprinted again and issued the license instantly after paying out a six dollar fee. We did not take a written or driving test and never received instructions on the rules of the road. Our only instruction was never give a policeman your license if stopped and asked. We were instructed to hold it against the inside window away from his grasp. If he got his hands on it you would have to pay ransom to get it back.

We then had to pay and file Mexican income tax annually using the number of our FM3 as our ID number. The companies Mexican accountants did this for us and we just signed what they prepared. I was about twenty legal size pages annually.

The FM 3 was good for three years and renewable for two more after paying more fees.

Leaving the country meant turning in the FM# and certifying we were leaving no debts behind and no outstanding legal affairs (warrants, tickets or liens) before our household goods were released to customs.

It was a real adventure and If any of our Senators or Congressman went through it once they would have a different attitude toward Mexico.

The Mexican Government uses its vast military and police forces to keep its citizens intimidated and compliant. They never protest at their White house or government offices but do protest daily in front of the United States Embassy. The US embassy looks like a strongly reinforced fortress and during mostprotests the Mexican Military surround the block with their men standing shoulder to shoulder in full riot gear to protect the Embassy. These protests are never shown on US or Mexican TV. There is a large public park across the street where they do their protesting. Anything can cause a protest such as proposed law changes in California or Texas.

Dunno says:

Good Fences make Good Neighbors

Folks, immigration is nasty, sticky problem that no one wants to deal with cause the minute someone takes their head out of the sand to say something, the “racism” card starts flying around like it’s going out of style. I find it simply astounding that people in this country illegally feel they have the right to demonstrate and protest about that countries immigration policies. No amount of posturing, filabustering, debate, etc.. will make any difference whatsoever. If we want to gain viable control over immigration, we have to stop and “reset” the whole process. The stopping part would be closing the border for a period of approximately 2 years. We then proceed to militarize the borders (all of them) and build a formidable, uniform concrete wall along the entire length (where geographically possible) of the north and south borders. (the military is best equipped with the proper resources for the enforcement part of the equation). During this period of “remodeling”, we also align the various administrative functions of immigration within the department of homeland security, everything from policy and procedure to technical infrastructure and data management. Same concept as closing a business for remodeling and renovation.

One other point to consider. I hear much conversation about how illegal immigrants will do most jobs americans won’t do and they are providing a cheap source of labor, thus keeping the cost of certain goods and services down. So, what happens when they become citizens? Suddenly, that same pool of labor is not so cheap anymore (employer taxes, benefits, minimum wage, etc..).

IMMIGRATION LAWS

IMMIGRATION LAWS

IF MAN WILL NOT LEARN FROM HISTORY, HE IS DESTINED TO RELIVE IT.

1. First, if you immigrate to this country, you must speak the native language.

2. Immigrants have to be a professional or an investor. Unskilled workers will not be allowed.

You can come if you invest in this country, but it must be an amount equal to 40,000 times the daily

minimum wage. If you don’t now have that amount of money, you have to return home.

3. There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools, no special ballots for elections, and no

government business will be conducted in your native language.

You will not have the right to vote, no matter how long you live here, nor will you ever be allowed to

hold political office.

4. If you’re in our country, you cannot be a burden to taxpayers. You are not entitled to any type of

welfare, food stamps, or any government benefits.

5. If you want to buy land, you will not be allowed to buy waterfront property, which is reserved for

citizens naturally born in this country. In fact, as a foreigner, you can be required to relinquish all

individual rights to property.

6. You don’t have the right to protest when you come here. You’re allowed no demonstrations,

you cannot wave a foreign flag, and there will be no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our leaders

or our policies, or you will be immediately sent home.

7. and if you come here illegally, you will go straight to jail.

NOTE: Every one of these laws are actually the current Mexican Immigration Laws.”

All I ask is that the US adopt the exact same laws that the Mexican Govt. has….tit for tat!!

“outlaw mexican food and those pesky illegals will have to go back over the border to get their meals. since they are so lazy, they’ll get tired of making all those trips and just stay home.”

You know, in Arizona I worked next to these people for a summer, and they are anything but lazy. As a matter of fact, their work-ethic put most of the work-ethics of my white, rich, “motivated” contemporary high schoolers to shame. The only real difference is that they have to earn all thier opportunities, we get them handed to us on platters and are praised for adding only the small amount of effort to do something with the opportunity.

Linguistical says:

Solution

Why don’t we fix the problem rather than the symtom? People come to this country illegaly because they want an opportunity for a better life. We treat them like criminals, but if your wife and kids were starving you’d do the same thing in a second.

Why don’t we allow them into the country to work and pay taxes just like everyone else. We may think we have some special rights because we were born here, but somewhere down the line your family was given the opportunity, so why not them?

It’s not necessarily a racial issue either. That’s what is visible, but if they were white we’d find something else to identify them and hate just as much. It’s based on fear. Fear that they’re getting something we’re not. Fear that they’ll hurt us.

If everyone worried about doing the right things themselves more than worrying about what everyone else is doing that might threaten them this would be a much better place.

I tried to hire good strong Americans but…

They are spent by lunch (let’s work through lunch and leave at 2pm) NO!

Hates to work a few Saturdays a month

Will jump to a another contractor for a quarter raise

The really good ones will learn my business and try to steal my accounts

The average legal Mexican labor will…

Works hard through 4pm or longer if required

Will gladly pick up all the overtime

Is the most loyal employee

Gladly accepts six month reviews on wages

Will work with you to better your business

Re: Mexican labor!

I don’t think anyone minds having the Mexicans here as a labor source as long as they are LEGAL. The illegal ones are what has everyone’s underwear in a bunch. It’s akin to someone saying “Hey, I want that new stereo system you have, so I’m gonna just walk in your house and take it and there’s nothing you can really do about it”. We are expected to respect other nations sovereignty, but no one has to respect ours? Seems a bit unbalanced to me.

Re: Mexican labor!

Dear Mr. Whteguy,

From the tone of your post, we can gather you are not shy to hire illegal immigrants just to be able to stack a little more money in your pocket and a little less in your workforce’s pockets and a whole lot less in the American economy.

If my assumption is wrong, please disregard this post. This one goes out to the companies who hire illegal immigrants:

Thank you.

Thank you for screwing this country.

Thank you for wrecking our economy.

Thank you for being an infantile egomaniac.

I hope you get busted and you get fined so fast you won’t be able to say “taco”. I hope the fines are so high you have to close the books on your company because you can never pay them. I hope you have mortgaged your house to run start business so the government owns that nice piece of property now as well. I hope your family leaves you for the sorry loser @ssh0le you are. I hope when all is said and done you have nothing but the clothes on your back and a giant hole in your pride and a smashed ego.

In my opinion, people who hire illegal immigrants to work for them are more than half of the source of the problem… and they are the ones who should pay as well.

Dustee says:

Re: Mexican labor!

Yes it may be the truth because they are afraid they will be reported to the authorities…or so they’ve told me. Once they become legal, I’ll bet that will cease immediately if not sooner.

They themselves are not eligible for welfare but their anchor babies are. I worked for the welfare dept for many years. How is it that two illegal immigrants can produce an American child…through law. This should change immediately. I think this child should be eligible for citizenship on it’s 18th birthday, like the French does it.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Mexican labor!

ya, and you probably live in the ghetto south where most of the labor pool is lazy welfare recipients looking for the next check… they just take jobs to get the check in the box and leave till DOHR requires they go get another job.

Trust me… I know… I’m stuck here in ghetto hell and all I see are a bunch of irresponsible, shit-po, crack heads. Man I’m glad I don’t live in New Orleans, this place in SWGA is bad enough.

As for immigration… The Great Wall of China serves as a great example. If it moves, kill it. I think the camera idea is a great idea. But I have one addition. make them mounted sighting systems on 30MM chain guns with electric actuators. This way you can aim and fire on the insergants…er… I mean imigrants.

mkam says:

Re: Mexican labor!

Any business model that requires you to hire illegal workers in order to remain profitable does not make sense. So if the profit margin is so slim that illegally low wages are required then perhaps it is time to refocus and rework your business.

If the companies that are hiring these workers are not punished then no amount of legislation, walls, or amnesty will help the root cause of the problem. If the illegal work trade was not several million jobs would even be discussing this? Hold the companies with business models requiring illegally low wages responsible and the problem will solve itself.

Patriot says:

Immigration and taxes

If we really want to solve this immigration problem and the tax (IRS) problem in one fell swoop….we need to instigate the “Fair Tax” where everyone….no matter who pays the same in taxes through a national sales tax. It’s the only way that Mexicans in this country will be accepted as workers….because they will be paying (honestly) their way just like everyone else. Once they see that they have to pay taxes like everyone else….there will be many who will just go back home….and the rest could apply for citizenship if they wished….BUT only citizens would be allowed to draw upon social security and only if they lived in the US. No checks being sent to foreign countries. Believe me….it will work. It is estimated that with the National Sales Tax….there would no longer be a property tax. That’s a pretty good reason for anyone to want to own their own home, also.

its similar to the difference between developed countries and third world countries. here evrything is more expensive than third world countries but we still have have better standard of living. Try to merge our country with a third world country and we will immediately have cheap labor but the country’s standard of living will sink too.

Its like a pizza.

do you want to share it with hundred guys because there are ready to take a smaller pie or do you want to share among your friends even though they demand slightly bigger pie ? remember you are one among them who is sharing and getting the pie too ?

bottomline, the more the people the smaller the pie.

The problem is the absolute failure of his/her home country to provide a quality of life worth living. The problem is the government of Mexico and other south american countries – not the people so desperate for an income that they’ll risk the loss of everything they own and death in the desert and deportation to cross the border illegally.

its similar to the difference between developed countries and third world countries. here evrything is more expensive than third world countries but we still have have better standard of living.

Medical benefits

Not just the Mexicans, but also the Africans, the Europeons, and others come here to suckle off the medical teat. I know of people who work in dialysis clinics and are bursting at the seams with undocumented aliens.

They get FREE medical, FREE dialysis, FREE housing, FREE food stamps. It makes me sick to hear of this, when we have so many that can’t afford health care in this country, and then have someone else come in and take up the FREE care.

No, I’m not opposed to anyone of a different color than I am, I’m a very mixed heritage person myself. But I am against the LEECHES who sneak across the borders for FREE care. It sucks!

And to the bigot who posted the imigration laws…you sir are an idiot.

BelgianAlien says:

What stinks...

Okay… I am an immigrant from Belgium, Europe. Legal? Yes, 100%. Always have been, always will be.

Here’s what I don’t get…

1. Between the time I arrived on my brand new visa and the time I actually had my greencard in hand, I did not even think about going out to look for a job. Why? Get busted and you fly back to Europe. No thanks, I worked too hard to get this far. Illegal immigrants (regardless of where they came from) seem to be able to find jobs easier than US Citizens and legal residents can… Solution: Don’t just fine the companies who get busted for hiring illegal immigrants, take away their right to own a business. Close their books. I don’t know of any company owner who is willing to risk that. Ever. If they can’t find jobs as illegal immigrants, they won’t be as eager to come over here.

2. It took my wife and I a total of 3 years to get all the necessary paperwork and about $10,000 in attorney and INS (that was before 9/11) fees to be able to legally move to the US to come and live with my fiancee and mary her. In the immigration process and the truckload of paperwork that goes along with it, it is stated very clearly, in nice bold print, that immigrants do NOT have the right to get any wellfare, as long as you are not a US citizen. And I don’t have a problem with that. I didn’t come here to milk the system and get as much money from the state or government as I possibly can. But somehow, these illegal immigrants find ways to break these rules and walk away with American tax dollars… tax dollars us legal residents pay as well, the illegal ones don’t.

3. How the hell do these people get away with helathcare??? Don’t even get me started on that. I think it should the mandated that doctors and hospitals notify authoroties when they suspect one of their patients is an illegal immigrant. Yes, give them the basic care they need, as is so nicely posted on big signs in 2 languages (more on the languages later) in the urgent care sections of hospitals all over the company, but turn them over to authoroties after that. After all, when you’re injured while breaking the law, you are most likely going to be cuffed to the hospital bed and are going to the police station and/or jail after that.

4. What is up with all the friggin’ Spanish all over everywhere? Rule #1 when moving to a different country… learn to speak their language. Assimilate. Do NOT, under any f*#%$king circumstances, expect the country to adapt to you. (Can you tell the language thing kinda ticks me off???). Learn the language, teach it to your children… speak it in your homes. I think the bilingual signs all over everywhere should be taken down and replaced by only English ones (except where it’s required by law to have them in multiple languages). If you cannot read them, you don’t belong in this country. Heck, tourists know more of the English language than most of the illegal immigrants who live here.

Amnesty? Forget it. Definitely after seeing them protesting on the street. They want to become US citizens (not residents, citizens, even) and they go around carrying the flag of their own country and signs with their slogans in their own native tongue… um… what the heck is wrong with that picture???

In my opinion:

– Close the damn border

– More funding and forces for the border patrol and customs in the airports

– More stings and investigations into illegal stays and illegal employmnet

– Deportation of all detected illegals with a 10 year ban on re-entry (as it is with legal aliens… if I were to become stupid and commit a crime against the immigration laws, I’d be deported and I’d have a minimum of a 10 year ban on re-entry in the US)

– Stricter penalties for companies and people who assist/hire/harbor illegal immigrants

The situation with all the illegal immigrants is a thorn in the side of all legal immigrants… and the recent debates are only pissing us of even more. Go legal or go home.

Re: What stinks...

Well Said! Illegals diminish the integrity of those who follow the rules when they legally enter the country. I agree with you 100%. In fact we should go one step further. For every 10 illegals shipped back home we should automagically grant citizenship to the next person in line for legal citizenship. Or we should bomb Mexico. They’ve got oil right? And some pretty cool beaches too.

Another inconvenient truth

> I supposed you love the idea of illegal immigrants stealing 2 million jobs that legal America born citizens should have a fair shot at?

Actually, it’s the tens of millions of high tech jobs that are being outsourced to non-Americans in other countries that is destroying our economy and national security. Those foriegners have much lower cost of living that legal or illegal immigrants. Those lost jobs are the important jobs for America, not lawn services and orange picking, but writing software, manufacturing new chemicals, and all the other engineering disciplines that America is losing.

The society that builds and maintains the information infrastructure will be the superpower of this millenium. Will it be China or India? It sure as hell won’t be America.

Anonymous Coward says:

I see nothing wrong with the webcam idea – or with neighborhod watches (which the author also seems to have a problem with). We (the American people) are responsible for encouraging illegal behavior because we reward that behavior by knowing hiring illiegals as a source of cheap labor. Because we are compasionate we educate their children, in Spanish. We provide medical care and other services. Why shouldn’t they come? There is little to be lost and much to gain. I don’t blame the illegals for coming here at all.

I blame ourselves for providing the incentives for them to come. I blame us for looking the other way so we can make a few extra bucks. I blame us for Regan’s amnesty (that really helped didn’t it). I blame us for not insisting that our laws be obeyed.

In the meantime, those of us who simply want our laws respected and enforced are branded “racist”.

Vato says:

Who's zooming who?

It’s a true story that American businesses profit by paying low wages to illegal immigrants eager to work long and hard. But how much of this is really economic, and how much of this is really about power over another country’s people? Knowing how race works in America, I can’t help believe that there is also a little bit of “colonialism” in play here. White American businesses (big and small) might just enjoy taking advantage of non-American peoples who have no rights. American businesses who employ illegal workers can sit on the veranda smoking cigars and drinking mint juleps while the hard working souls put gold in their pockets. The outcry from American business is that American labor is difficult to manage and expensive, but it may be also that working Americans have real rights and freedoms of which American business cannot take advantage.

Blogs bring out the worst in people

I kinda love it! All our emotions boiling over, blaming each other and anything else for problems in the world (and popularizing this blog). Hey, let’s be nice. I think the camera thing is a good idea. If someone wants to monitor the border because they do not believe in illegal border crossings, then let them. I would rather focus on other things. As a legal immigrnat (non-Hispanic), I emphatize with their plight (and flight) but I know the solutions are not as easy as the mean spirited bickering exhibited here. God bless all humanity.

Andrew Strasser says:

That would be dumb.

Why not just use the satellites that are already there for this purpose? If you can see a pimple on someones face, or golfball, you could easily set up feeds of the border that could show a wide array very easily. Heat movements could be added to the programming and it’s stuff the military uses on a regular basis in recon.

anonymous coward says:

wait a minute! there are only a handful of countries where someone can just “show up” one day and assume residency. you can’t even do that in MEXICO!

why should we grant instant resident status to Mexicans in the U.S. when they wouldn’t even do the same for us?

i would love to move to Paris or London or Munich, but EU residency requirements prevent that. Why is it wrong for us to have the same residency requirements as the rest of the world?

some guy says:

Mr. President, I'm headed to Mexico

Dear Mr. President:

I’m about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I’m going to walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I’m on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.

2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.

3. All government forms need to be printed in English.

4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.

5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.

6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.

7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

8. I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy access to government services.

9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won’t make any effort to learn local traffic laws.

10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.

11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and never donate to enforce any labor laws or tax laws.

13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that Pres. Fox won’t mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely. However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail hunting with your V.P. ‘

Thank you so much for your kind help.

Sincerely,

Me

RE: Latest idea

I just returned from Mexico after 7 days in Cancun. This whole notion of Mexicans coming to America is bu11sh!t. I saw plenty of construction going on. Well why can’t Mexicans stay there and help build up their own damn country. Cancun is not the only place that has construction going on in Mexico, so don’t give me that bs. And to the point of just making them legal b/c they are hard workers…what kind of crazy sh!t is that. Hell I work hard just like a lot of Americans. I don’t free load off of our goverment. I wish Bush (whom I voted for) would grow some b@11s and let us start shipping some of these illegals out.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Actually...

Or, you know, instead of kicking them out because they cost a shitload, we could just not offer government services?

I never did like the idea of rewarding people for being poor, anyway. This’d also get these “lazy white asses” to work instead of waiting for their next welfare check or having children.

Mexicans stealing Americans’ jobs? Since when were these jobs the property of Americans? Don’t you think that the jobs should be the property of the people willing to work the most for the least amount of money?

But no, Americans deserve these jobs, and companies should be forced to hire Americans so that the greedy people demanding higher wages are rewarded, huh?

Some Brown Dude says:

A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON

Ok lets get one things straight. The only people who belong on the continent of AMERICA are the indigenous people. That being said It was not only the English but also the Spanish that eradicated and subjugated the indigenous people…the few that were left after having been eradicated by diseases and wars. Any form of writing was burned by the Spanish as heretical. In what is now known as the U.S. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS from not only ENGLAND but other countries exterminated the indigenous population.

In contrast to the U.S. where Europeans just killed the indigenous people in Latin America ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS from Spain and other countries raped and married the indigenous women thereby creating a MIXED RACE.

MEXICANS ARE A MIXED RACE. They are descendants of not only the invading spaniards but also indigenous women. THEY ARE DESCENDANTS FROM A TIME WHERE THERE WAS NO BORDERS. Props to any English Speaking American that can trace their ancestry to this country before its discovery.

ENGLAND DID NOT RESPECT BORDERS

IRELAND DID NOT RESPECT BORDERS

FRANCE DID NOT RESPECT BORDERS

SPAIN DID NOT RESPECT BORDERS

But yeah those mother fuckers who have been here for a millenia, who are THEY to cross a river? Right??

Fucking hippocrites deal with it.

BTW 50% of all illegal immigrants who come here come on VISAS good luck deporting them….if you can find them that is!!

Brian says:

Illegals

Send the illegals home and send the businesses owners and ceos who hire them to jail. So if there are no jobs no reason to come here. The illegals are using tax payer money and hositpals are paying for their medical care. Other people have to wait in line to come here, illegals should be kicked out and have them wait in the back of the line. If 50 people sneak into a movie while you wait 2 hours in line to get in dont you think those people who sneaked in should be kicked out. Secure borders now!!! By the way many legal immgrants and americas are doing the jobs supposedly nobody wants to do. This is all bullshit and I’m tired of giving people breaks when they break the laws of this country. Send them home!!!!

Illegal Immigration

I don’t have a problem with anyone who comes to our country for a better life(legally) and learns the english language(because it is the most used nation wide). If you come over wanting to be an American which means paying taxes, obeying our laws, and being a productive citizen then welcome. I have a problem with people who come over illegally and put a strain on our nation. I hate going down the street and seeing all of the signs in spanish or our children getting sub-standard educations because the school systems are to over run. It bothers me that my health insurance more that doubled this last year because of the strain that ill. imm. have put on our health care industry. I know that it is not just the il. imm. it is also those trashy americans who think that it is better to keep having children to get more wellfare. With all of the ill. imm. issues that we have right now it is only compounding the other issues. We need to deal with that first. If we make it impossible to live here then they will have no chose but to go home. If we make severe punishments for anyone to give employment to or house ill. imm. and cut off all aid to them, they will have to go back.

BJ says:

The Border

Mine the entire border. It works well in Guantanemo Bay, Cuba and would work well here. If we were truly serious about stopping illegal immigration, we would do it, but the bleeding hearts in Washington, California and all over the country seem to relish the thought of cozying up to the illegals for some reason. No question they serve a great need in working the fields and other lower labor group jobs. But when you assess the cost of medical care, child birth, child care, welfare and all the other freebies that taxpayers must shell out, it’s a disgrace. If employers want the illegals, let them pay the freight!

Any support for aleins by government or for a better
word special interest groups, should be considered an act of treason ! This to me is a ploy by wealthy to keep a man from earning a fair living by reducing him to mexican standard of existing
