Shocker — Kids Get Around Web Filters

from the no,-really dept

Following last week’s Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, apparently today is Obvious Wednesday. First, the news that gee, internet users really do use the internet, and now News.com has an article with the breaking news that kids can figure out how to circumvent web filters their schools use to try to keep them from accessing undesirable sites. The only surprise here is that the reporter seems surprised. What’s next? Kids sneaking into R-rated movies? Hiding Playboys under the bed? It’s been proven time and time again that filters don’t work — so, again, why not use the time and resources spent on these filters and tracking kids’ ways around them on teaching critical thinking and good judgment instead?

critical thinking?

They are being taught critical thinking — they can evaluate that these technologies are crap, that administrators’ efforts are often ineffective, and how to use their minds to research methods and evade both. Sounds pretty educational to me.

The principles of good judgment need to come from their parents. The teachers need to be teaching math and reading, and there is hardly enough time in the day for our teachers to do even those simple things with their huge classes.

Jim says:

Re: critical thinking?

I have spent many an hour with my oldest son reading and discussing religion, philosophy, and aesthetics. Guess what? He still does a lot of foolish things. No amount of parenting and education can circumvent this: the ultimate responsibility for one’s life is one’s self. My son has to decide for himself to seek truth, to love excellence, to exercise good judgment. No one else can do that for him. Web filters can’t do this for him. But it doesn’t mean we don’t log web activity on our home network!

Re: the solution to this is so easy

i wont post but i know the solution to this and the bad thing is as an adult ran into this problem and it took less the a day to defeat my solution works just fine as of this post. i did it it on a computer you could even find a platform to complane about your sisters but. every youtube and more restricted.

here’s how to find the solution.
i have known grown men that have sat on the side of the road confused as what to do about a flat tire.- there’s a jack and a spare tire in the trunk! sure people can loose them but these are people my age that did not even know to check. the solution to this is very basic but basic thinking isn’t really taught anymore you just ask google.

Sean says:

NetSweeper :(

At my school they use some fucking program called NetSweeper. We cannot disable it via the computers we use, nor out accounts as they are all linked to a server, and all our accounts are so fucking restricted. We have been using proxy sites, but WTF now they are blocking those -_-

But, most schools, unlike MINE, are fucking idiots. They block a webpage like.. http://www.gamefaqs.com, but they won’t block all of it’s subpages. These people are, without a doubt, fucking morons.

It’s even sadder when you see in the home. Most people’s parents don’t know jack-shit about Computers, or what little they know is how to set default settings. What good is default settings if the kid can just use a Proxy site?

That’s my.. 3 cents.

TSkiff (user link) says:

Re: NetSweeper :(

Hey they use Net Sweeper at my school also and it is a real pain in the ass i know. I found a proxy it doesnt blcok though. “cantget.us” and it works you just have to make sure you enable java script and dont save the cookies if you are worried about them tracking you. If you find a better way let me know. ebbyton@hotmail.com

Cheers

Re: NetSweeper :(

Perhaps you should read up on your school’s filter system. Our system is old and actually we don’t put in sites directly its done by the company. I ‘ve seen some subdomains not blocked that should ahve automitically been doen. This was not our fault but the filter’s company. So it may not be the people who you blame.

However it is your school’s staff to balme for not locking down IE’s property pages. We do that here, we may not restrict the desktop too much (over this summer we will) but we do lock that.

You have to understand, you don’t own the computers, you don’t own the connection, its a learning tool, nothing more.

Hobot. I wish I had that link in high school. That’s pretty nifty.

Sean. for the love of god. If you’re going to post on a blog, at least try to sound half way intellignet. f*** them, those mother f***ers… You truly show you’re age when you make posts like that. Does anyone have a link to Blog etiquette?

As for the article. Seems like something we already know. Guess it’s a slow news day for CNet. What’s next? “Hackers figure out ways to circumvent computer security measures. Last night Micr….”

Anonymous Coward says:

You have a better idea?

why not use the time and resources spent on these filters and tracking kids’ ways around them on teaching critical thinking and good judgment instead

Bwahahahahahahahah!

When was the last time you volunteered in a public middle-school classroom or library? How much one on one time did you or other adults in the room really have for any of the students. Furthermore, exactly how interested were the kids in hearing anything an adult had to say?

Maybe things are different where you are… but here the point of the filters is that the kids have to make some minimal effort to get around them. So that when kids do download porn or visit some objectionable site (and they WILL) they can’t claim it was “accidental” when their parents come and complain to the school. If their parents even notice.

Teachers can barely pound the already required curricula into most kids … don’t ask them to “teach” behaviors that parents and society should be actively modeling for children every day. You can pour as many resources as you want into it and it will fail worse than the filters.

Color me cynical.

bob says:

Blocking is crap

Blocking at my college is easy to get by and so are most blockers used by schools, unless they really really are tight up but like somebody said don’t go to the main site skip to subs, ebay was blocked at our college you just went to a sub, only reason we generally don’t go around is because we are computing students and the tech support seriously just sit in the tech room scanning the college computers waiting to pounce, but the worst case of blocking wasn’t even proper filtering, aol parental control, when I was about 15 th setting were put to like 15-18 or what ever it is and it blocked everything but aol search and links from aol search. It was ridiculous.

Slimmy Jimmy says:

One filter known to work.

http://www.bsafehome.com/

The bsafe filter has been tested by a friend of mine at his worksite… Not only did the filter do it’s primary job, but the service/maint. guys couldn’t even backdoor the computer to even see what the filter was.

This filter is patented and the setup of this one in particular would make it impossible for anyone to get around (accept maybe the “2”, yes 2, that install it).

Be secure, Be protected, B-safe.

Stan says:

Easier then you think

Getting past a filter is cake. external proxys, remote desktop, VPNs thats just the basics, and why not with all thats being blocked. the CT governement mandated that all image searchs be blocked, which was recalled but come on. the real bad stuff yes should be blocked but honestly who is preverted enough to look at porn in school.

wiplost says:

Censorship, Governments and this subject

In Cuba and China, Im sure that one of these circumventors will work. These could crumble the Great Fire Wall of China. I hate censorship. At my school’s library, you are not allowed to use google. They do not actually enforce it and I just close the window if anybody starts looking. I do not have to circumvent any filter.

Chris says:

Works with all filters...

All you need is a spare linux box, a bit of understanding and a broadband Internet connection. Some friends and i (one who is a web programmer set up a basic proxy service that can fool most filters. What we do is have one machine with a web interface ehich you use to type in a url, it sends this on to another machin to grab the page you want, strip out the meta information and send it along to another mates server, which then forwards it on to the workstation at school, pretty much untracible. we are currently working on an option that will also search the body and header for typical banned words and make it so the filter doesnt recognise them (hack into h4ck or ebay into e.b.a.y) then we will have the mother of all proxies 😀

(it helps all having dynamic IP’s too as if one gets blocked you can just change it :D)

Bob says:

The Google Workaround failed

I tried http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.myspace.com

My company uses Symantec Web Security for a proxy and it gave me this:

Access Denied

The requested document, http://www.google.com/translate_p?langpair=en|en&u=http://www.myspace.com/, will not be shown.

Reason: Found in Denied List (deny). Entry causing block is http://www.myspace.com.

Oh well.

Cubine says:

Sometimes they do work.

I know that at my school, we have a LOT of computer-retarded kids. Therefore, nobody is smart enough to get around the blockers (except for a select few of my friends…) Here’s a couple conversations I heard:

person1- “Oh my god, dude, I hate apple computers so much….”

person2- “Yeah, dude, they suck. But those macs are cool.”

person1- “Oh yeah, man, macs are totally awesome!”

…………………..

person1- “My computer is a windows xp….”

person2- “Oh yeah? I have a windows xp PRO.”

person1- “Aw man, where did you get that? That’s so cool.”

person2- “Yeah, I can’t wait till they make windows 2006…”

Yes, people are THAT retarded at my school. Our librarian uses a keylogger (which could technically be illegal)…. I still don’t know how to get around it. But I never need to get around the blocker, unless I’m bored and need to hop on a forum. Even then, the stupid librarian wouldn’t know who it was, because I made myself an admin account on the school comps….. which I could do some very interesting things with.

yoadrienne says:

oh my gosh this whole discussion was most informative. my school blocks proxies daily but currently they have yet to block me from my google personalized homepage. so, i have added some games on there to keep me occupied when i get bored. that http://www.google.com/gwt/n site though i doubt will be blocked since my school’s homepage is google.

all they are doing is forcing us to become more resourceful

Christopher says:

Blocking? No chance.

One word:

JAP.

Run it from a USB key. It is absolutely impossible to block – it leaves no signature, can mangle the packets, and is a local proxy. The connection is encrypted with 128-Bit RSA and cannot be filtered. What’s more, a variety of different servers can be loaded, and cascading proxying is possible. Yes – it does require a certain level of tech savvyness, but it is worth every geeky moment. I hacked it to be invisible to VNC, even with the window in full view… and to dynamically switch proxies after a certain time period has elapsed, dynamically discover new ones, and more! I can also (because it is java) run it through a web browser, or through the java virtual machine! Hell – I even at one point had it detecting steno’d (Steganography) images and attempt to process them with a certain set of keys I would provide to decrypt them.

Yes, web proxies are convenient, but there is nothing that can break through a filter like JAP can.

If however, you are stuck without your USB device and need to use a web proxy, try signing up for the regularly updated peacefire circumventor lists. (www.peacefire.com)

I think they have about 20 at this stage, and theres at least one new one every 1-2 weeks – so they can’t block them all! 😉

But try JAP first.

DM (Dungeon Master) Jack says:

You are waisting your time.

I probably won’t come to this website again due to just browsing from boredome at my job, but I had to add a comment for once. You are waisting your time with this tech crap at your schools. I mean if your in a shop or doing a computer class, it’s cool, but in the freakin’ library??? Come on people. The best place to do experimentations is in the home or at a computer class, since it will most likely be safe and you won’t have to sweat on your forehead about getting caught. If you experience no guild for getting caught, good luck to you man and hope you have a bright future (said sarcastically). Been there, done that, got caught (parents as teenager, by wife as a young adult, and previous job when I was pissed off one day). Trying to get away with things only gets you in trouble more – especially when you get caught (and you have the attitude that you won’t and you don’t care). I repeat, been there, and done that too. I ain’t doing that again either. Learned my lesson the hard way and am submitting to the law of the land and hope you do too. -This goes to the students who keep posting- As of pertaining to the parents, all’s you can do is be patient and give counsel when needed.

blaze says:

just create more work for me

DM Jack I agree with you, even though you’ll probably never read this. And to all of you kids who think of your “retarded school administration” as “idiots”, think about this: State law demands a level of filtering software be in place at all times (at least here in California), otherwise we don’t get the funds to maintain the current network lines, which means no more google proxy for you. I spend a good portion of every day responding to “wtf!!!11 why is “….” blocked??!?” And you know I wouldn’t have to deal with this everyday if you thought about more than yourself for a second. There are legitimate problems with all content filters, but considering the countless millions of websites/ip’s that have to be categorized and maintained, give us a break. Without it you might as well go back to solitaire, cause the Internet is down.

Vinnie says:

A real reason that blockers are bad.

A lot of people are overlooking the reason that most blockers are bad; they filter out a lot of good content. I know that at the high school I went to it was impossible to access content on breast or testicular cancer because of filters. Not to mention access to honest information about birth control, pregnancy, and abortions.

I would hope that after all these years the internet wouldn’t seem like such a big scary bogey man to school officials but maybe it will just take some time.

Christopher says:

Why?

Why circumvent blocking software?

-> Because it blocks all the wrong pages

-> Because it cripples useful information and legitimate research

-> Because, when to use the computers, people have to sign an agreement stating they won’t partake in the download of offensive/inapropriate material or face reprimands, it is unnesesary and blatant overkill.

-> Because, with decent protection on the client machine, and the use of operating systems other then windows, the risk of damage due to inapropriate web surfing is greatly mitigated (And using blocking software because there is inadequate protection on the client machines is just lazy)

-> Because it doesn’t actually protect people from things they ‘shouldn’t/are too immature to see’ – because if they call it up, chances are they allready do it at home – and it is hardly damaging them. That said – who looks at porn in a library!?!

-> Because it is calandestine. Blocking software and monitoring of people’s internet usage in certain environments (i.e. school, library, home computer) is ridiculous. It doesn’t exactly promote much trust does it? If an organisation like a school is unable to trust its students enough to allow unfiltered internet access – then how are they supposed expect trust in return from their students?

-> Because it is just another clever corporate protrusion (an exploitation of our fears, actually) into ordinary life – filtering software companies have sat in the back pockets of politicians and beurocrats and gently and insidiously coerced money from them, through a long campaign of scare tactics.

-> Because, when blocking software is as poor at actual filtering as it is, is it not redundant? Why have it if it is so easily circumvented? (This might sound like a double argument, but it isn’t – there are more reasons why it is redundant and simply an extra cost/time waster for everyone involved, students, administrators, parents, teachers, etc.)

-> And finally, because it doesn’t protect anything in the long run. Sure, you can prevent your kids from ‘accidentally’ discovering pornographic material on the internet, but why filter them when at some point in their lives the actually HAVE to discover this stuff for themselves and make their own judgements. Would it not be better to put the ‘damaging’ material in a more age appropriate context and accompiany it with a comprehensive yet not frightening explaination of what the content actually is? Wouldn’t this make kids more prepared, less scarred/damaged, etc – when they are actually ready for the blows of life instead of wrapped in cotton wool???

I could drone on… and on… and on… There are countless reasons why blocking software is redundant. Didn’t we all just criticise China for its filtering of the internet? And yet it happens in your schools and homes.

Don’t blind yourselves with age old arguments put forth by crusty, conservative ‘representatives’, who put forth their absolutist views and impose them on everyone else by any means.

If kids end up circumventing the system, it means the blocking software isn’t doing its job. Not technically, of course – but in that it isn’t preventing kids from finding out. And isn’t it what we all should do at some point?

kelsey (user link) says:

filters and kids

personally i sont think the filter shouold be so strict. if we could go to where we needed to go in the first place we wouldnt be spending our valuable time searching for a way around school filters. im not saying that there shouldnt be a filter st all because obviouslly someone would try to look at porn, but then again if the teachers truly do their job and watch their students when they are working then it would not be an issue anyways. because if someone went on a “bad” website the teacher would know whoa nd what and they would go to the office. i hate filters because i cant get on and do what i need to do.

jt says:

Perhaps kids would stop trying to access “forbidden” sites, if they were not forbidden, I know as a high school student myself there is just something about trying to break the little rules. My school blocks out myspace, harmless as it may seem, we had found ways around their block, but soon they caught onto those as well. Kids never used it as much when it wasnt forbidden, but when they blocked it, everyone wanted on.

MY SCHOOL FILTER IS SO GAY

the filter has to be so high tech. I have tried everything you guys have said previousley. NONE of them work. If you could keep tryin to get ways around this stupid filter. It has customized categories and everything. I can usually get around pretty well, but this has me stumped. You can post here or email me at fruitylooper2@yahoo.com

filters

http://www.networkingfiles.com/Firewalls/httpanywhere.htm this dosen’t work on my schools network, and adding the s to http is lke a crap shoot it only works on some sites. If you get pissed at your school use this http://www.killdisk.com. It erases your hardrive and you don’t even need admin. priviliages. My school is gay when it comes to blocking sites but i have nothing better to do so i will continuie to try every little thing that comes across my eyes. (P.S. yes i most likely have misspelled words and bad grammer but oh well)

Filters1 filters2 says:

about filters

I think also that filters doesn’t work, but if a Company get several employers watching the web pages that users send them thinking that are offensives in sexual and other contents and putting in a database if so it’s possible block after these pages for this users more accurately. I think it’s a better solution than filters.

John says:

Jap=omgwtfpwnage ;)

I agree with the guy that says jap rocks, its awesome, and it takes care of almost all blocking software.

that said I am gonna let a few more options out.

if you cant use JAP, you can discover what blocking software your school uses, and then if you can, get to the task manager, then kill the proccess tree for the software.

there problem solved.

there are alot more but im not gonna get into those.

also heres a hint DO NOT POST PROXY SITES on a forum!!! schools have programs that search through forums and auto block the proxy sites, I say someone should set up an email, meant to send the proxy sites out through email to subscribers (for free), if anyone one wants to try this im more than willing to help out on a project like it.

next, to the network admin who said there needs to be blocking software on the schools comps.

yeah I understand that, but, one of the reasons I am active on trying to disable blocking software, is that theres a CHALLANGE in it at my school. the blocking software is tough, but its fun to get around it, and even more fun to try out new methods and knowing that im beating a type of software that my school pays so much for but is so ineffective.

well if anyones interested in starting a service like the one I stated about IM me at

hey, I know what all of you guys are saying…FILTERS are CRAP! I ws lucky enough to get hired…temporarily by my school district to do Tech work…hence I know the district wide Admin account name and Password…but not even that helps when it comes to myspace. Up untill about a month ago ALL of the major proxies were not blocked….that SOON changed! now the only things that i have found are the google mobile site and also a very slow but usefull cache version of anonycat….if you’d like to hear how this is gotten e-mail me…petiddee@hotmail.com…I agree with Blood2121…we need to stop posting the sites on forums…BAD IDEA! I knew the ESD (umbrella district over my own) runs checks 24/7 for proxies….so best of luck…

Re: Re: Shocker -- Kids Get Around Web Filters

wow… nice job. I have been using a couple of other proxies but this one works much faster than the others and doesnt require any programs. My school just caught me using the Miranda IM program so I got my account locked for a week. Its funny cause that blocking doesnt end until Thursday and Im on a school PC right now. Its funny how stupid our network administrators are. Now I have to run it off of a USB stick but I guess everything worked out for the best 😛

Abby says:

Filters Are Stupid!

The filters in our school are good, and i give a lot of credit to the System Admin for being so bloody smart! But when they block things like Google Images it doesnt stop us from going on there(as you can just use the NZ version instead) but only makes me more determined to get around it…..hense that im now banned from the school internet 🙁 but only for a couple of weeks

And theyve blocked all the proxy sites i know, so if anyone wants to emeail me some ones- abby123456@hotmail.co.uk as i agree that we shouldnt post them on here, as theyll only pick them up

Renegade says:

Netsweeper

Ever since my school installed netsweeper I have been able to get on myspace by clicking the link from a notification email. Even though typing http://www.myspace.com into a browser would get blocked, the links had something like www1.myspace.com… which was able to fool the filter enough to get around it. As of today, this has been fixed and all links to myspace, hi5, and meebo have been blocked. Within an hour in the lab I already found suitable replacements.

For instant messenging, I use a program called Miranda IM. It can be run off of a hard drive, or a USB if your computer admins block all installations. This program combines AIM, MSN, and Yahoo into one messenger which cant be blocked if the internet is completely turned off.

For myspace, use JAP or a proxy. Proxyninja.com has worked up until now but I know that it will be blocked as soon as I post. Just keep looking around and you can be sure to find one that fits your needs.

Also, has anyone tried using a ping? In some systems, you can go into notepad and write a simple program as follows:

ping http://www.myspace.com (or desired site)

pause

then save the folder as a .bat extention. When you run it, it will hit myspace.com and give you their IP address. Type the IP into your browser and surf as you usually would. Netsweeper has figured a way to block this, but others might still let it past.

I hope this helps anyone who is frustrated. Schools fucking suck and they are only teaching students to find deceptive means to get around their mediocre efforts. FUCK THE SYSTEM!

For more information or to find a better soulution to end this problem, email me at skidude6200@gmail.com or IM me (AIM) at skidude6200

Re: filters?

it seems like epic keeps asking for proxy sites so urgently because he found a group of people who know tons of them and now he has the chance to put them in database of blocked sites for the filter he admins. either that or he is addicted to bebo like heroine and has to log on every 5 minutes but isn’t taking precautions to cover up his tracks so its easy to trace him and block whatever site he used. people like that shouldn’t be trusted with information, no matter if he is the former or latter.

Renegade says:

That may be well and good for someone who goes to a public school but I am a dormatory student. The computers at school are my only link to MSN, myspace, and anything back at my old neighborhood. Are you saying that going around the admin just to stay connected is a bad thing? I pay $12000 a year to go to this school, so I pretty much paid for the computer and the connection. It is a learning tool, but that is not all that the web should be used for.

I also think that internet blockers are a waste of time because your fighting a losing battle all the way. I think that parents should tell their kids right or wrong and leave it for them to choose, because in the end they will have to make the choice and there parents will be the only ones they have to enfluence there choice, not fliters

Ryan says:

Ping

I’m not sure what a proxy is, it might have something to do with what I’m about to say, but here’s a way that I found to get around things. Go to the start menu, go to all programs, go to accessories, and then to command prompt. In the command prompt type “ping” add two spaces and the website url you want to go to. for example:

ping http://www.myspace.com

copy the list of number (63.208…etc.)

enter the numbers in the url line. try that.

Another User says:

Same as the rest of you nerds

First of all dont promote the pinging, all it does is allow for the teachers to block command prompt, like at my school… aswell dont share proxies only have a group of people 2,3 or else the teachers catch it and its blocked, and their are only so many proxies out there. finally google cached pages work well if your just trying to get to the initial page and no further… i.e. you want to get a a page for information but not to sign into or go to a link through it…

I cannot get on any proxy avoidance websites because it has them all (all on this list), it cannot be tricked to go into other parts of websites, and cannot be avoided using no pictures as it blocks and breaks the site you go on, it really is powerful.

Plus, it knows everything I go on as it records all the sites I try to visit on the blocked list, it really is horrible.

You think you have it bad? Try this, controlled by the council, not the school, blocking everything from hack sites to homework ones.

Getting past filters at school? You guys (n gurls) are so lame for even trying to do this lame shit at your school. The filters are doing what they are supposed to do, to keep your lame ass from checkin out sites that you got no business going to at school! Do that at home on your own pc. You ‘Tards are going to loose the computers at your schools if you keep fucking with them. Too bad you’re pissed off because you can’t get to MySpace. Deal with it and wait until you get home. No pc at home? Ask Santa Claus for one. Buy a used one, you can get them for about $100 maybe less. Save your birthday money instead of buying weed. It will be good enough to DL porn and MP3’s. So you can jack off while listening to shitty music. Nice life huh? You fuckin ‘Tards.

  • Start>Run>Cmd>ping
    “www.______.com>ip address… ect.

(however unn effective works, on first page of myspace but unable to log in)

  • Tried Proxy servers
  • Google…

and ive come to a conclusion.

I wouldnt want to set up a vpn, because.. I need to install softwear to enable vpn…

I wouldnt want to get a flash usb key and download jap… simply because the consequances of that would be… well not good..

I am looking for a simple way to get around the schools blocker with out getting major penalty..

our school uses 8e6 TECHNOLOGIES…

yes it is not just an average filter..

but anyways that would be besides the point.

if you have any help regarding this topic please email me at electrixs@hotmail.com

also if anyone has any tutorials, information on how to
make your own private website with a proxy on it that can bypass 8e6 techn. that would be great thank you..

(lets keep this underground) so word does not spread…

and btw your not a hacker if you use proxy servers to get around your schools “HI TECH” filter.. a word of advice dont tell your friends thinking your hacker hot shit cause you know proxys and your school hasnt gotten to them yet.. because you will fuck it up for the rest.

filters and kids

My web filter is extremly strict because if i get assaigned a slideshow or something that requires pictures I CANT GO TO GOOGLE IMAGES! My school is pretty much shooting themselves in the foot by doing this, but just because thye blocked it doesnt mean that im not going to try and figure out another way around it, to be honest i think that STRICT filters are just a form of ignorance.

Timmy says:

school is shit

my school has 8e6 r3000 which seems to be growing, and it blocks almost all of the above. only https://www.onlinedarkzone.com/proxy works and not very well. our entire internet connection comes from the city of auburn so admin privaleges wont help, and since im in a dorm i cant do my shit at home. is ne1 knos how i could get around or nething email me @ psycho.5@hotmail.com

mandy says:

help meeee

So my school issues us Dell laptop computers. they dont give is any freedom what so ever. They think that we are immature little weirdos who go and look at porn all day. so they blocked every single site except google and even then you cant get to anything unless you cache it when half the time that doesnt work. they have blocked looking for/using proxies, myspace, aim, meebo, band websites, games, email, chats, forums, blogs, music related things. and everything you can think of. so if you can find some way to help me get back at least one of the filters, please do.

Oreparma says:

Not all of us are browsing MySpace, but need a way

My school filters are the strictest I have ever seen or heard about. Every proxy site is blocked, because teh filter searches for it. SItes are blocked for ratings of “none”, “entertainment” “Information;technology” “alternatate/ bi/gay lifestyles” “occult/alternate religions” and “tastlessness.” Some of them I understand liek the part abotu blocking fourms and chat sites, because that’s not what school’s are for.

But I’m in Journalism and its frustratig that I have to do almost all my research on my home computer and can’t just work at school because of the filters. A site about teen pregnecy rates was blocked for “entertainmetn”, a site about arrnaged marrigaes for “shopping” and then I couldn’t get anythign done on my artcile about CSI at school. There’s even instances when I have to try at least five times to get onto google because it will block it for “information;technology”

I understand he necessity for filters, but it is so frustating when I can’t do my schoolwork. What about when I research my Senoir Project (a huge year-long research paper, physica prduct and speech that all senoirs have to do prior to graduatin) which is the literary styles of JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling?

And how stupid is it to apply the same filters to grade school children as high school children? You’d think that someone would have realized that high schoolers are going to have to have more lax filters because of the range of things that highschoolers research. We’re not eight-year olds trying to play checkers. We’re young adults and while I recongize that many use the school computers for frivolity, what about those of us that are actually trying to research and can’t because of filters? And what abotu those that don’t have a net connection at home? Our district filter leaves tham high and dry. We used to have a much more lax filter that blocked a fair amount of things like the pron and aother such things, but for the most part, let high school students have a wider range of the web. But now, sites like something.com (or somethign like that) which features nothing but white sapce with ‘something” written on the top of the page, is blocked for a rating of “none”?

Right now, I’m trying to use the cached options on google and translators, but again, it’s hard because you can’t click anywhere else on the site with the cached version and half the translators (including googles) are blocked. I’m goign to try putting in virtualbrowser (which is blocked by itsefl) into a translator site and see what happens. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get through. If not, well, I’m outta here soon anyway.

Easier then you think

you would be very surprised at how young the pupils are who try to access porn. You think you have the right to access what you want, then i think again young man what you do on the schools networks reflects back onto the school and could land you in very serious trouble with the law regarding the misuse of computer act 1999. By all means use the technology wisely and it will enhance your learning but be safe it’s not big and it’s not clever to try to damage the very tool that has been provided by the school for your benifit.

Anonymous Coward says:

Works with all filters...

You think you are clever then you are a dope! untraceble my arse!
what about your ISP who provides you or your mate with the connection don’t make me laugh ha ha!
you may think you are clever but when you can spoof ip addresses and countries even mac addresses then you are entering a web of intrigue and this in itself becomes traceable, wise up dude you are getting away with it now because you have not done anything really that bad. When you do try to do something extraordinary then the establishment will come down on you like a ton of bricks. BAMMMmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!

Slightly annoyed?

Yeah I am slightly annoyed right now. Will someone of a higher intelligence on proxy avoidance please email me? I can’t get past the proxy blocker called WebSense. All of the proxy avoidance sites that I have tried as of late haven’t worked. Yeah I know? This is getting irritating. My girlfriend knows how to get past them but I keep forgeting to ask how. I feel irritated. Myspace should not be blocked, it’s a friend gathering place, but they block it for dating and serious relationships. It’s so retarded. I need to check my myspace at school sometimes and I can’t do it. So god strike me down for this. But I swear to god I wanna kill a proxy blocker!

i think that learning how to get past these filters(i figured out that i could use a proxy) actualy taught my more than i have ever learnt in the so called I.T. lessons.

the idea of teaching is not to tell pupils exactly what to do, but give an outline of the task.

CANT AGREE MORE

Not to get the comments off of their already screwed up paths of bickering and meaningless cross-chatter, but I could agree with the writer more. Schools spend so much time working against the students and trying to control them that they arent working WITH the students to educate. I mean thats what schools are for right? Adults always seem suprised, they blame society and TV on their own incapible parenting skills when they find a playboy under their child’s bed. It’s a shame in this “Whos to Blame?” society that kids arent allowed to be kids and adults choose the part of the overlord. Children are going to find a way around everything you can put up, it is the nature of the world that our children will surpass us at one point and it is this nature that make mankind continue to develop and grow. Please, parents: Dont mock us… respect us.

Hey if you guys wants to get around all that stuff go here, http://www.nickoli.net scroll over search and click puppies then click continue to search engine, and theres a html cgi proxy. Just type google.com and click and then you can go any where through google. For example type gamefaqs.com in google and then click search and then click or wherever you want to go and it shouldnt block you, only thing is sometimes the blocking program will prevent you from downloading things to a computer but you can still play games, movies, etc.

High School Blocker

My high School had the worst possible security on the network, they used a program called fortress 2.2.8. Me and my mate got bored of having to run through proxies so we deicided to take control of the schools network, checking the fortress site it actually said there was a bug in the system the reset the access and they were recalling all the copies of it. Lucky for us they didnt recall out schools we spent about 2 hours playing with the comps befor ei discovered that pressin alt+f brought up the password screen for it i spent about 10 min entering random passwords (getting them all wrong lol) till i typed in and a message came up saying that the system has reset please enter new password. Hallejua we did it we took control of the network and just to piss off the admin who were constantly trying to catch us, the main way being they had the principal announce that anyone caught “Hacking” will be expelled imediatly lol so we thought boo that so we taught everyone in our class how to do it then they taught their mates, eventually the whole school could do. Mwhahahahahaha a trained army of hackers lol they never expelled anyone but i did learn they changed the system after i left.

Who does the filtering

Well, lets see…there are 16 million new pages or changed pages a day. A company of 100 techs doing nothing else can’t possibly hope to keep up, how do you expect the underpaid, over worked school administrators to squeeze another 70 hours into thier week to supervise your kids who can’t or wont follow simple instructions. “Here’s your class assignment, work on it.” Fix the problem at home and let the teachers teach instead of babysitting and trying to parent your kids.

Filters

Required by federal laws The (CIPA) was signed into law on December 21, 2000

“Technology Protection Measure
A technology protection measure is a specific technology that blocks or filters Internet access. It must protect against access by adults and minors to visual depictions that are obscene, child pornography, or — with respect to use of computers with Internet access by minors — harmful to minors. It may be disabled for adults engaged in bona fide research or other lawful purposes. For schools, the policy must also include monitoring the online activities of minors.

Internet Safety Policy
The Internet safety policy must address the following issues:

Access by minors to inappropriate matter on the Internet and World Wide Web
The safety and security of minors when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications
Unauthorized access including “hacking” and other unlawful activities by minors online
Unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal information regarding minors
Measures designed to restrict minors’ access to materials harmful to minors.”

So quit complaining about them, deal with the elected officials, mind your teachers and parents, do your classwork as instructed and get over it already!

EBAY IS BLOCKED

It goes like this, the baby boomer generation believes that all teenagers are up to no good, mainly due to the POS Ford Mustang and your stupid asses, but the truth is that most of us are a lot smarter than any generation before us and that they can’t accept that. Just because we KNOW HOW TO ACTUALLY WORK A COMPUTER, doesn’t mean you should block us from websites like Google or Ebay. Why the hell would they block stuff like that? Pornography is WAY overrated so we don’t even need fillters, besides, I uploaded a HUGE database of porn onto the library computers to get back. If we are even going to look at stuff like that, we would do that at home. Search google for anything and it comes up blocked saying it has nudity in it. I’m pretty sure no one’s going to type in Shakespeare and expect to find a naked poet. K9 sucks ass, Websense is a bunch of faggety ass old hags with sand in their vagina, and Total Traffic Control totally sucks hard core donkey balls.

It’s ridiculous. Get over it and do something useful and worthwhile with your time.
At the same time, thank you for your amusing, nonetheless, dumb posts.

It’s funny because, I can get around these blocks and I will admit, it ia not as easy as you guys make it apear to be. Just so you know. There are a select few kids who can acualy get bye theses blocks, and from there other kids find out, and from there more kids find out, and then an admin blocks it. And that thing about what’s next? me and some friends were going to sneak into an R rated movie. My best friend at one point had playboys under his bed. I thought that was funny. And this is to all kids who have been posting proxy links…

Lizzie says:

i love how...

Alright, first off i love how this started out with people talking and discussing the issue of the web blockers, why they are good why they are bad, (with the exception of a few who just decided to yell their case without using correct english) to people just begging for proxy sites…. now that being said:
Ok so, It is the responsablity of the parents and/or gaurdians to teach their offspring some sence of structure, but that doesn’t mean that it happens. Not to mention, kids (me included) spend 8 to 9 hours at school, that’s not including all the extra curricular things such as sports and clubs. Then most spend about 6 to 8 hours of sleep give or take, so that’s say 14 to 17 hours of the say gone. THEN, because now-days in almost all homes parents have to work more then one job, if there even are two parents to begin with. Times that they get home range from 3 pm. to 2 am. thus, leaving no time for parents to do what is said to be their job and teach this structure to their kids. for example: i personaly, hardly ever see my mother, between my school, her work, her college, her social life and mine, there’s simply no time (and being as she is the only parent i have… ) for me to be taught “structure” by her.
I have gotten most of what i have learned and how i act from school. My peers, my teachers, even the janitors!
So, I understand the point of the blockers, but lets face it, we like to break rule just because we can. The more you try and put up blockers, the more we are going to try to bring them down. understandable right?
i mean, in my journalism class we have a lot of free time so we get on computers, all i do for the whole hour is look up sites to get around blockers, it’s actuly sorta fun (and reading what people have to say about them is rather entertaining.) but one school administrator commented one at one point in my searching and did bring up a good point.
All those sites are doing, is providing an easy key as to which sites to block.
On that note, they block the wrong sites. It’s nearly impossible to do any research at my school. Thats how i got into searching to get around blockers, because i needed to do research for science in the 6th grade, and the site i needed was blocked.
And there is that myth that teenage boys use the computers to look up porn at school… yea… they don’t…
now as i have said all that, and made a point (though the explination was long) I shall be off….

Thankyou,
~*~Lizzie~*~

My school is nuts....

my school use the edutech block. i’ve tried several ways to pass it, inorder to get game sites, xanga.com, and other largley harmless sites. despite the harmlessness, they get blocked.
for a bit of a lark, i went to google images, and did a few differnt ‘unmoral’ searches, just to see what would come up. believe it or not, everything did.
so, i can agree with any one who calls the local blocks dumb, as i deal with the same. i mean, anyone who has ever visited xanga.com willl agree that its an entirely safe site, and yet it is blocked, well google.images isn’t…..life just isn’t fair, and internet blockers aren’t much better.
i must agree, that crictical thinking doesn’t help in the ways it should, and that Good judgment should be tuaght by the parents, not somebody behind a desk with a teaching degree. after all, how many students really listen to their teaches, anyways?

uh yeh if yall want, you can try to use http://www.spidersanta.com or http://www.bananapeeljacket.com to get around internet filters at school. thats what I used to get on myspace and stuff like that for a long time but then the school blocked it after a while. It’s worth a shot. by the way, my myspace is http://www.myspace.com/hobsonator…add me…peace

Funny

Lol i have read almost all the comments on here and i just cant help but laugh. I am graduating from high school in a couple months. But the reason i keep laughing is dont you THINK that the people who are using the filters such as web sense dont google what you guys are searching for??? they go into forums and write down the proxies YOU guys are writing down and BLOCK them. thats why proxies are no longer lasting as long as they would normally last because YOU guys are posting them on things like this and they are finding them as well. i do agree that i hate the filter as well… for instance whats wrong with Gaia? its not porn. same with neopets. and when i do look up projects and things of the like most of the time there blocked. but than what ever if you guys want to continue posting all the open proxies down go for it but i have warned you on the fact thats,,,,that is how they are killing all our proxies so fast. people like ya’ll posting via internet

If your school is nayhting like mine your gonna have constant surveillance on you, so using proxy sites is gonna get em banned right away. my school use netcare- piece of wank

all u need to do is download firefox at home, rename it winword so then it will execute at schl of your usb key, make sure you have the proxy add on downloaded aswell already, when firefox runs switch proxys to ones who have got of a succesful proxy list, loads on google with ip addresses and ports.

Only problem with this you will get fcked for using firefox so you have to hide it, i cant help you here as i am the proud owner of netcare less a program desinged but the i.t tech in our school which he foolishly left in a computer once so me and my mate have it, this gives me control of all conmputers in school and applications so they cant race me for shit as i do wht i wnt, create random schl accounts etc

Kids gettin around web filters.

Im 13,and ive had a computer ever since i was 4 lol.Yeah, kids will look at dirty stuff, teach them morals or it will get worse.I guess some parents dont realize that you can’t stop them from looking at unmoralized sties,Or magazines. There are kids at the school that could provide.Kids are alot more intelligent than some would think. You can google a web unblocker.Teach your kids about WHY its not good to look at bad stuff.Don’t pressure them on making them not being able to play rated T games, sometimes its good for kids to learn things in those games.I play online games and i think ive learned most of my morals on them.Getting to talk to people teaches kids to trust them and then they can teach each otehr good morals.

P.S: don’t put too much pressure on them,be nice to them and help them with the school work and tell them about all the money they can make if theyre smart.

NetSweeper :(

WOW, how old are you???? It’s because of people like you who have to drop curse words ever three words thinking its cool…that the schools go through so much trying to forbidd stuff. Its plain to see your parents didnt teach you any morals!!!! Come on, yea, I think its dumb too that they blocked certain sites…especially for us high school kids. It’s not like we are really goign to look at porn at school or something…and for those who would do that explains why they put blocks up!!!! Do you guys not have anything better to do…just wait till you get home or go to the libary to use a computer and look at your myspace or facebook or play games!!! Get over the blocks!!!!

JTR says:

Hey

Just do it at home. We are never going to get past the schools damn filter, so we might as well just quit our bitching. (Haha, I just wanted to tell someone to quit their bitchin’, it’s so funny to say…)

But Either way, the reason they don’t want us to do shit like that at school is because most teenagers give out their names, numbers, and addresses and some slutty, horny, blonde whore gets raped and gets on telivision and cries that she didn’t know what she was doing, and she’s so sorry! Wa wa wa!!! …. Moral of the story is, lots of teens aren’t too bright and they end up doing something stupid online and the school is just protecting us from that.

Although, the same exact thing could happen to someone at home. The other day, some guy said he was fifteen and started asking me gay questions like what are you wearing, what’s your name, and what’s your number on Myspace. So you know what me, a more intelligent teen, did? BLOCKED THE FUCK OUT OF HIM. Unfortunately, some people aren’t smart enough to do that. They go, “My name’s Sally, and I’m not wearing anything! My number is 555-1234!!! Call me, and maybe we can meet up later!!”

And now, I’ll quit my bitchin’.

Justin says:

Ok i have a couple ways for you all :
one way would be to go to the command prompt type ping then do a space then type the website for example:
ping http://www.myspace.com once you do that hit enter then it will give you a number like this 216.178.32.( this is the number for myspace i got) you can do this for most sites but just recently my schools admin has made it where the command prompt doesnt work so i do it at home then use them at school.
some sites i know are
1. http://www.kingkongforum.com
2.www.piktro.com
3.www.allaboutabe.com ( this site is good if you can get on once you get to the main page there will be a tiny pic of abe so click it then you will go to the proxy site once there there is a link that says in case of teacher if you click it takes you to a page full of facts about him.)
i hope this helps

http://www.freewebprox.com
http://www.jtunnel.com
http://www.bluetunnel.com
http://www.orangetunnel.com
http://www.angelfire.com
BUT GO THROUGH GOOGLE TO GET TO THESE OR ELSE THE SCHOOL CAN GET YOUR HISTORY AND BLOCK EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE SITES…INCLUDING THIS ONE SO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU DO AND DON’T FUCKIN GET CAUGHT…I DIDN’T FIND ALL OF THESE FOR NOTHIN AND ADD ME TO MYSPACE…GO TO SEARCH EMAIL AND TYPE KMARLING13@MFIRE.COM AND CLICK VIEW PROFILE AND ADD ME AND I THINK IT IS SET TO PRIVATE AND MY LAST NAME IS MARLING

K9 has met its match

Have K9 at home or school, can’t defeat it? Well I’m Glad to give you 3 options to get around it.

1. Install linux on a secondary partition

2. Run linux from a USB thumb drive or Live cd. My favorite disturbution for this is DSL, Damn Small Linux

3. And the ultimate way to defeat it at home. Get vmware player and vmxbuilder and use either a linux or windows cd to make a virtural machine which K9 cannot affect.

Any questions/ comments or know any other ways to defeat it?

well... i am ok...

i try to figure this out myself…
i managed to come up with this:

1: IP Adresses – go onto Command Prompt (start menu >run > cmd + hit enter… type ping http://www.google.com (replace google of the site of your choice)

2: SlipSurf – simalar to IP adresses, but it is a exe file you download off the internet

3: UltraSurf – this generally will work… it does summin to IE which allows you to pass thru blocked sites… tho it works at home, and in my public library, it wont work at college, tho ip adresses generally work…

4: is to use proxy sites… i use a ip address, which is a proxy site… its http://65.59.219.20/ … its fiddly tho… but better than nothing

5: KILL the process… i have BT internet at home, and my dad thought it will be good if he turned on the parental controls… i then found out the processor name of bt yahoo, and killed them… i then killed explorer.exe, and if the bt yahoo processes came up, i killed them again… again, fiddly but effective

Jefferson says:

At my school you can’t get past the filters, they have netsweeper and Novell, try t change a setting in IE, that’s been blocked. Try to run firefox off a USB drive, can’t do it. You can’t run .bat, .cmd, .exe, and more. The only way around that I found was to make a crapy firefox in Visual Basic since it’s on the school computers and run it in debug mode, it has worked, somewhat.

P what? (user link) says:

One filter known to work.

I am not going to lie. Its true. Our home computer has it now. My dad got it so we couldn’t use the internet to look at porn. I didn’t mind, I don’t anyways. But bsafe doesn’t have level of protection… it has one. Which in my mind should be NAZI LEVEL 5 TRILLION!!! ! Bsafe blocks absolutely everything even remotely public. I understand blocking porn. But I don’t understand blocking myspace, and AIM, and Ebay, and facebook, and limewire, and ares, and free news sites… It blocks everything! I can go to like three sites now, I would almost rather go back to not having internet, because Dictionary.com is about the only site that doesn’t get blocked now. Stuff gets blocked now that I have gone to before that was entirely clean, and now it says blocked because there is porn on it. It is a shitty blocker, don’t do it unless you want to be ridiculously bored.

P what? says:

Bsafe

Anyone else have Bsafe? I have found several ways around it… Proxies mostly, pretty much all of the suggestions off this site, but the next day, they are blocked. I don’t understand how it catches up so fast. It takes about .3 seconds of light thought to get around the school blockers, but Bsafe is fucking ridiculous, you simply cannot best it more than once or twice

Abby, a high school student says:

Its more about ‘wasted’ time. I get the feeling that its not about content, but the time thats spent on said “Undesirable” webpages (which are usually flash games and message boards).

And even useful information gets blocked. Just in the hopes that if something amusing is not accessible its going to make students do something they don’t want to do.
Believe me, If I want to play games and read webcomics instead of doing homework I’ll do it. And if I don’t have games and webcomics. I’ll doodle, until I get a new proxy emailed to my home by Peacefire.

The whole “block out anything amusing” thing is never going to work. It becomes a hinderance instead of a plus-side. I can’t even run image-searches on google anymore.

kyle skinner says:

I Know all the way Around blocks

most schools and homes dont know this but when theres a will theres a way. for schools most people try kproxy but thats not really what you want to do..since iam a hacker i thought i should give you people some reasons why schools do block out site some are not educational and most have bad or crude comments on them….the way to get around it is if up have a dial-up connection write your connection number down its like a phone number log off the computer and switch the computer over to “log in with a dial-up connection”. then put the number in and the computer will not have any sites blocked out…..if that does not work then you did it wrong.

Paul H. (user link) says:

laughing at this article...

listen, im 18, turning 19 in april, and i got only one thing to say, kids already do all that stuff. Why? 1. because they can. 2. because they know they cant get caught. when i was young, i never snuck into a R-rated movie or hid any playboys under my bed, no, i payed my money and bought my way into them R-rated movies. they don’t have to sneak anywhere, if kids want it, they will get it, its as simple as that. Yes its true about how they should use the time on actually teaching the student, because no matter what, they will get what they want. there is no stopping a young teen when they want to watch something or read something thats on a blocked site. even if its at home. yes thats right, there is a way around parental control that any kid can get to. you know them as the trusty Adminstrater user in safe mode. that can be used to give their own account unlimited control of the computer when they are online. so why fight it? Give up. thats the best thing i can say… the ammount of money you wold need to put into making your computer completely safe, it unknown. the best thing i’d say to do is just download the latest version of foxfire, which is free, turn on the parental control and wait… because eventually they will get around it.

oh and the foxfire thing, its because its a WAY better Internet browser than IE. i use it on my computer because i never get pop-ups with it, which is a really good thing because no matter what site your on, if they are sponsered by some Adult rated company and have an add, a pop-up is sure to follow. and if your thinking, “Oh, but i got the latest version of Pop-up blocker…” well think again. i got the latest version of rogers and if i use IE or even the high speed internet browser, pop-ups still come up. and dont think its because the pop-up blocker isn’t on or working, because it is. i always check to see if it is. so basically foxfire has a built in pop-up blocker thats a lot better than oes you can download. and its free to download foxfire. i thik the latest version is ver.2 but im not sure.

I AM EVIL

I am a k12 school sysadmin. I am your enemy. I also believe censorship is evil. I don’t filter web content because I want to control you mind, I do it for the money. Simply put the federal government has said that we shall be CIPA compliant if we want Title1 or Erate money. For my 2500 student district that is about 2 million dollars a year. On the technical side the only real way to beat a a good content filter and tight network is with your own https circumventor. I am now creating snort rules that will detect lots of traffic to a single https cgi url in a short period of time, compare it against an exception list and send me an alert. However this is just the arms race strategy not a real solution. My preference is that you surf to what makes you happy, keep you mouth shut, and don’t make it my problem.

Ok here’s what you do everyone. Listen closely. ?You listening? Wait! Don’t go! You’ll miss it!

Stop, look around, find you’re teacher. Then, simply bitch smack her in the face for making you do a waste of life project. Teachers know sites are all blocked. In fact they hate it themselves. Every teacher I have interviewed has hated CIPA for doing the naughty to us all with this pg rated kiddy stuff. In fact my school was against Bess being put on the systems here. The teachers and administrators aka “technical computer information supports” had a meeting or rather a vote on the whole idea of bess, and the teachers voted negative.
Going behind the teachers vote the admins put it on the server anyways. Even as teachers you have no power over CIPA. If you all are oh so concerned with the prevention of web access. Go to the leader rather then the pawns. Fight the law of CIPA “Childrens Internet Protection Act” That’s the law issued that forces schools to use such harsh pg restrictions. Stop complaining about not getting to a site and start fighting the main source.

How many more comments must be sent that says the same thing over and over!

“I hate bess”
“Bess fucking needs to die”
“Help me get around bess please!”

Tally count is up toooooo…….4254345x+? ARGH!

Rofl.
I love ranting. It’s so fun.

Norton Internet Security

My parents installed Norton Internet Security and I can’t get to anything- I haven’t really cared about MySpace or anything up to this point- but they blocked http://www.fanfiction.net, and that was like my ‘internet-house’ or something, I’ve tried all the proxies (well, at least, all the ones that I’ve seen on this page), but they’re all blocked, too… Is there a way to get around Norton Internet Security?

Milly Ray (user link) says:

Filters are made to be broken through...

I’m a senior in highschool, and I’ve known how to use proxy sitwes to get around filters since 6th grade. When I found an article saying “Kid’s finding their way are firewalls” I showed eveyone in my class and we all shared a good laugh about it. The schools waste wayyyy too much time trying to set up firewalls and block proxy sites and anonymators… but they’re wasting time.

The Hacker of Emporium, PA says:

Novell

Novell is the gayest filter ever on school computers, ive tried anti proxies, until finally they changed it and ended up blocking it, so now im trying this new thing its cald firefox if you are going to use it, save it to a disk an install it onto the mainframe comp, and also a neat way, my school has had quake 3 arena downloaded on the computer for 3 years until finally they threatened to write everyone up, who had it there username, but it was set up so every kid could play against anyone in the school, so if you want to start that up just download any game and save it to a disk and put it onto the comp, and have other people download the game to for competition .

Hack says:

Novell

LOL. Dude my school uses that stupid Novell thing to. But me and my friend got on the internet and went strait to the firefox website and just downloaded it to the desktop of our computers. The administration is so oblivious to what goes on. but something happened lately. someone put a virus into the computers and when they got it fixed every site that had the words proxy, anonymizer, etc. were blocked we’re working our buts off to get another website to get around the block(Because everyone depends on me and my friend to get them onto myspace and what not 🙂

angel ramos says:

why care in the first place?

why would any one care if thier breaking into the computers all there gonna do is look in myspace talk on aim to see what people are doing ang play games that they want to its not a bad thing its like telling a kid that u cant have ffun no more so stay bored and do nothing on the computer and thats why people make proxy webs for schools and out of schools because parents block the most stupidist things that way thier kid cant have have and watch them play solitaire on the computer while the parent gets to go on myspace and talk on aim all im saying is please stop the blocking of myspace and aim please thank you for taking your time reading this note.

sorry but its the truth says:

you guys suck

look guys, take it from someone who spent hours on a school computer looking and finding ways to hack onto myspace and all that crap… it aint worth it. once you do manage to find a way to get on dont share on sites like these cuz all that happens is they get blocked right away.

they are and always will be three steps ahead of us. we think that we’re doing good n stuff, but they not stupid. who do you think is in charge of setting the filters up in the first place??? its not just some old men in suits with big asses, its young peeps in college who used to be hackers n shit.

anyways, im not gona fuss just keep in mind and do the normal shit. erase the history and dont give away ur hackin secrets… especially on the internet. if you do want ways to get around it… i have lists of sites and a bunch of other ways… email me a firecurlz123@yahoo.com

cyberproxy.info

cyberproxy.info has like 5,500 other proxy websites. So if one gets blocked, just move down the list. The site says that they all work. I tried a random one and it worked. But I don’t know about the other ones… I haven’t tried any of them at school though. I don’t get online much there. And I don’t have a filter on my computer. I’m only doing this for my friend. She has K9 Blue Coat. If anyone knows how to get around that, please e-mail me. She is desperate. Thanks!

highschoolstudent says:

school blocking

k this hole facebook thing is really anoying anlong with everything else the schools are blocking becasue by useing this blocking program there are a lot of things that we try to get to for school asigments and cant because there is something that falls under a categorie that need to be blocked well in my opinion i think that schools should have a program type thing wear students can go use the internet for facebook or msn or wut ever so long as there is now nudity or anything like that have them sign in wen get go on the computer and sign out when there done and that way no one can skip class to go on computers. have it during like the two luch periods so the room can be supervised and you only get a limited amount of time to be on the computer for personal use. the reason i think that we should be aloude to do this is because some people dont have a computer at home or they dont have a printer at home and they only way to get there work to school that they do at home is to email it to them selves, but they cant get it because msn is blocked and really msn and facebook dose no harm so long as there no nudity and stuff like that and people follow the rules that the schools set if they do something like this its like a reward for us and if they want they can make it so that if u have a record for skipping or somthing then you cant use the computers for personal use only skool. the schools can have the library computers block and then a separate room with like 5 to 10 computers for personal use during lunch times. i just think it would be a big hit and that some one should mention it to the school borad even though there gonna be like ya no oh ur just an angery student who cant do what she wants to do well thats not true there is, i feel a very good point to this and that students might co-operate with schoold beter if you use this to brib them if thats how you want to look at it.

Blue Coat

I’ve gotten past i twice be4 but i can’t remember how i did it. Except that I hacked the password and made a bat file like so:
replace C:urls.log “C:Program FilesBlue Coat K9 Web Protection” /r
replace C:urls.html “C:Program FilesBlue Coat K9 Web Protection” /r
———————–
to clear admin events (note, I put a blank urls.log & urls.html file in the hard drive)
And I always cleared the logging after every internet session. This is the only method I’ve found. But now my dad has changed his password again and I can’t remember how to get past it. :/
For now… I use https://wwww.kproxy.com or https://www.stupidcensorship.com
StupidCensorship has a mailing list you can attend to recieve new web proxies they set up ecery now and then but some stuff won’t work on certain sites like myspace. For example, if you click next in your inbox. You get an error (This is due to javascript)
K-Proxy allows you to get past that delemma but it doesn’t seem to play music on myspace or view videos (at least with K9). Also, HideMyIP is a nice program that works. I tried once… uninstalled it… and when i tried to reinstall (to crack it) it came up with an error when I ran the program.

i dont wanna have to crash all the computers in this school again 🙂

Mr. KC says:

I have a way

I have a way to play on games, it’s quite simple.

Offline content.
My school has RM Tutor 2 and Netsweeper, and offline content gets past all blockers.
I made myself an offline site called webhack games, it had everything on it, all the best games, and some links to proxy sites with all useful info.
I used a html encrypting tool to make sure my school technitions don’t find out where abouts on the drive the content is coming from, either that, find a site that nobody else knows about, and embed the content (if it’s music, games or videos) into an shtml page and encypt all the data.
I recently got my internet banned for a week for “having fun” with the school’s intranet site.. lol. so i used my game’s site, but made it more sophisicated using dtml and php scripts and made a page where if they get the password wrong it takes them to a page FULL TO THE BRIM with javascript alerts, about 365 alerts pisses people off.
I can send you the webhack games if you want, as long as you have about 5MB of drive space you can have all the content you want.

To get my new version, just email me at:
unknown_coder@hotmail.com.

I love to bypass web filters for people and am currently at a summer camp that runs 8e6 R3000. I am accustomed to websense which i have not had much trouble with, until morons didn’t delete their history. However, 8e6 has killed everything ive tried, proxies, pinging, embedded links. I’m not any good with web design or encryption, but would be thankful for ideas or advice

Apparently the makers of censorware are planning to put zone alarm style firewall features into their products. Feature #1 protect the core system files(ex command.com regedit.exe etc) from unauthorized access. Feature #2 prevents unauthorized programs from starting. Feature #3 prevents hacked programs from reaching the internet. feature #4 prevents pings and also stops you from being able to access certain ip address ranges. Feature #5 is 288 bit alphanumeric passwords with special characters(!@#$%^&*()_+) that are virtually impenetrable. there are probbably many more features than i can list here and each one is probbably even harder to break than the last

Anonomous says:

If you go to port scanning websites you can scan for open ports and possibly use these ports to bypass bess. just type free online port scanner into google and click search. ps please use firefox with the Mcafee siteadvisor add on enabled. there are people out there trying to con people into using and even downloading from their site when the program or whatever u are using or downloading will fuck your computer up

Alex says:

Plain and simple: Where there is a will, there is a way. Kids will always find a way around blockers, whether its through a website, program, or simply a matter of hacking a computer. Kids don’t usually let a blocker stop them, and I say this having just graduated from highschool. You can keep trying and you may stall them for a while, but I promise you, they will find a way.

So perhaps, simply teach them right from wrong, morals, and try to trust that they know what to do and what not to do. If they still do stuff they’re not supposed to well, lets think: 1: they’re just kids, they tend to get into trouble, so don’t fault them for it, and 2: maybe yopu as the parent didn’t teach them well enough

A Kid in school says:

Filters and junk like that

Ok so i go to a school that has a filter just like everyone else on this site. My teacher for my computer applications class does not care that we listen to our ipods or play games as long as we do our work first. THis concept works out very nicely people generally do what he says and respect him. If all teachers accepted this format my school would be a whole lot more productive. Also i agree that filters do hamper legitamite quarries and scholarly pursuits. Just because an idea may seem “radical” or “innapropriate” does not mean it should be censored and that it has no academic value. That and the fact that I just want to play a game of line rider which in all fairness is not really a game is really pissing me off.

TG (user link) says:

Why?

Everyone knows that the “Bad Do-ers” are the reasons behind the filtering rules, not the “Good Do-ers”. This goes for all of you, for the rest of your lives. As you get older you will start to experience road blocks in life. These road blocks were eventually setup by the Government at the request of the people. Government does not implement laws without them being lobbied by the people. PARENTS DO NOT WANT THEIR 10 YEAR OLD CHILDREN TO, MISTAKENLY OR PURPOSLY, ACCESS ADULT MATERIAL ON EQUIPMENT PURCHASED WITH TAX PAYER MONEY. You children can all try to justify it with your “Freedoms”, but as an adult I realize that “Freedom” is a state of mind, not an actual way of life. Their are rules and laws on just about everything in, and around, my life. Some of these effect me and some do not. So, please, stop trying to justify your actions of skirting around these filters. You will eventually get caught and you will eventually be labled in front of your peers and parents to the point of embarassment. All this would not be necessary if you actually tried doing school work at school, and leave all the other stuff for home. Then again … do you think your parents would be ok with what you were viewing if they actually knew???

derek says:

freedom being mocked

the internet was created for people to exchange information. filters block out any site that might have “potentialy dangerous” or other crap excuses to get your money. The fact is that that teens WILL find a way to get around them. The fact remains that filters are only blocking the inevitable. It is also unconstitutional because it is limiting peoples freedom of speech. And besides, schools thaat use this don’t think that a kid wouldn’t be looking up pornwhen every time there is a computer there is almost bound to be a teacher somewhere

Fentible says:

You have a better idea?

I agree with these sentiments entirely. I teach middle school. In addition to the ‘no time’ factor and the ‘not our job factor’ there’s another limitation to teaching responsibility: middle school kids, Lord love them, aren’t wired for responsibility Middle schoolers come wired to challenge limits, take risks and push the envelope. Filters, annoyances thought they be, serve as check points past which a student must consider himself accountable for choosing to venture.

fentible says:

NetSweeper :(

Some good ideas here among the rhetorical weeds and thoughtless verbiage. Clean it up, bub, c’mon, f-bombs and the like don’t impress anymore. Every moron on the planet feels liberated to limit himself to that all purpose interjection and its close cousins. Your ideas are valuable. Brush off the dirt and let us benefit from them more easily.

Moose says:

the stuff they block.........

Its really sad what some schools (like mine) block, and what they don’t. They block google images because some guy will really look at porn *sighs* they block youtube but none of the loopholes to get on it, account to favorites. Most Proxies I used last year have been found. So until I find something I’m SOL.

Somerandomkid says:

Im hearing some pretty interesting stories about schools and proxy sites. Well let me tell you a story about my experience with school computers (sorry its alittle long I went crazy or something typing)

Freshman year our school gave us all labtops that when we were Seniors we could buy well that year we had a pretty cool adminstrator he lets us get away with getting on Youtube and Myspace and downloading ares and all that. School was heaven on earth for computer freaks like me that had parental control on there computers at home

um seem near the end of that year he had to start blocking youtube and myspace cause it was slowing the system down and stuff
(lol I just remembered oneday I was streaming a video on youtube which was taking FOREVER to stream and suddenly one of the teacher got on the intercom and started yelling for anyone that was streaming to stop immedently that they were having a hard time updating some stupid teacher site or somethin’…XD…boy i was freaking out!) but we managed to use a proxy and get passed it and he didnt seem to care. But last year (sophomore year) we got a new administrater and was like a stoned hippy so we were like “cool he’ll be easy to get around and stuff” …WRONGO!!! about 2 or 3 months into the school year my computer had a problem or something cant remember and I went to him and asked him to fix it. Well teh stupid retard complete ignored me and automaticly scearched for my ares and uninstalled it telling me to not put it back on again cause its illegal and stuff. GRRRR I was so Pissed I had over a 1000 song on ares that I hadnt gotten off that got completely wiped out (or I thought they had been anyway) I immedently went to one of my friends with a memory stick and asked them to give me a copy of ares and I reinstalled it (they had the site blocked) well after that was when things started getting worse Sites

a couple of months later sites started getting blocked left and write first Myspace then Youtube (of course I couldnt get on youtube if i had wanted to cause retard fucked my computer up or something and it would work) but we rebeled and people started passing the word about certain proxy sites, well that worked for a while and we thought we had won unfortuntly he was pretty wise and started to block the proxy sites as fast as we could find new ones and use them eventually the teachers realized that there was probally millions of proxys and just told us that if they caught us using a proxy they would take our computers. Of course we didnt give up so easly we continued to use them but we would empty our memory or use a proxy that had a school educational name or someting. But in the end that didnt work either and I as well as a Few of my fiends got caught and had our computers taken for 1 week. When I got mine back I decided that I would just watch movies on my dvd player which others had decided to do as well. Well Ill be damned if they didnt block that too. Seems that some kid had hacked into the adminstrators computer and gotten some passwords or something and had been passing it around for people to get which caused everyone to have there computer taken and check for 2 weeks when everyone got theres back the memorystick pluggin and dvd drive was completely blocked. So for the final 2 months of school left we either had to entertain ourselfs with Ipods and Gameboys or sleep the day away.

but before school went out we heard some very interesting news. It seemed that our little stoned administrator was not comming back next year. So we all rejoiced and celebrated

Unfortuntally this story doesnt have a happy ending. This year when we came back we began to ask when we were to get our computers. We were told the only ones that were getting the computers back were the Seniors cause they have alot of writting and profolios to do and need them. But we could still buy them when we became seniors. Only recently did i find out that I could get my computer back if i join STLP so im trying my best to get in it.

now i know one of the reasons they did it was directed toward the failing kids cause they were the ones that used the internet the most but to me that was really unfair to the people like me that are on the honor roll and stuff.

Sorry had to get that out of my system

Sexy B from that Ruston (user link) says:

Blocks get worse and worse

At my high school we are issued laptops at the beggining of the year and we can keep and use them at will for the entire year. Sounds great I know but the funding from the city allows them to beef up the blocks ten fold. But to be honest we never cared becuase we did things other then web based. The first thing to do was to some how stumble onto one of those oh so many folders on a windows computer that allows you to run blocked programs and then we were set. A combo of varuous progranms plus firefox made it so we could go to any site we wanted just by typing the url regularly. The best was a program called Freegate. But like I said, if you cant find a folder to run it in their is mostly no hope. Every year we find a new way and then they block it, then we find another way, then they block it. The cycle continues and will never stop. Their is no such thing as a block that cant be pulled down or bypassed. All it takes is time, patients, alittle luck, and decient computer skills. I mean you would think that at a school that issues laptops everyone would be commputer smart. Even since having them all the way from middle school(in middle school we had macs though) their are still people who cant type and dont know anything else about a computer outside of the word Proxy. I swear it sucks to have the selected few who come up with the ways to bypass the filter all together are called nerds but the dumbies who are called smart becuase they thought of using two proxys at once. If your going to bypass the filtars at least have enough computer smarts to know that proxys have a very short life span and never last but for so long under any compitant school or library…Unless of course your school just doesent give a dam. LoL

Ay my school we have found glitches in windows xp which allows us to get thought the allocated 25 mb space whic is complete crap for year 11’s at school and we can save what ever we want onto the hard drive, download and install,

ive found my own proxy program that runs of a usb stick any size its only a 2 mb program which alloows any website to be unblocked.

but i TRY to help those poor defenseless kids whos parents put k9 filters on their computers.i dont care about hacking into the computers at skool.
i want my friends with k9 to be able to get on their myspace at home, not at a friends house.

I dont understand whats up with netsweeper but ok…..
freeproxy.info worked but it cant run java script….w/e
but now they put a program called fortres 101 on all the computers so now i cant do anything no:
right clicking
start
cmd
run
or .bat files

i can still get into c: but fortres wont let me really open anything……. if i could save a .bat file i could open cmd or i could get rid of it if i had msconfig but i cant….
anyone have an idea on how to get around it or delete it (that would be awsome)

C2K NI

Yeah, C2K sucks. But the adults had good intentions.
But I don’t see why it blocks dragonflycave.com. I am such a fan of there, and it burns me up that I can’t go there during lunchtimes. It’s listed under ‘malicious content’- and there is nothing malicious about it. No games are allowed, all you can get onto is educational stuff, and half of that is blocked. Once, they even blocked Google. You heard me. Google.
They give you thirty megabytes to work with. Or was it three? Ha, I forget. And the staff? They can see your screen from their accounts, so there’s no privacy.
I’m going to try some ways around…
I can’t see why they need to wrap us in bubblewrap.
Teenage girls, at least, aren’t about to go looking at dirty stuff.

matt says:

critical thinking?

teahcers need to teach more in school than math reading and sciences… im currently in highschool and i can honestly say that just gaining knowlage without gaining wisdom with the knowlage makes the knowlage useless.
for example if a teacher shows us how to use a gun… we gained the knowlage of how to use it but no wisdom on what to use it for. should we leave it up to the individule to find out what to use it for?? Alot of parents who just plainly don’t give a shit about their kids don’t teach them what to do then where will they gain the wisdom? They won’t. I think that the educational process in the u.s. is in need of major improvment.

8e6 R3000

8e6 R3000 has blocked all proxies. We can’t get onto any of them from the school computers, no matter how many we’ve tried. So I think the last thing to do is try to run a proxy from my home computer and pray it works. It’s a little complicated but if you Google it you should be able to find out how to do it. I can’t explain; I’m in the middle of computer class. 🙂

I guess i can’t complain too much cause i was using “stolen” internet in the first place, But they have just put up a filter that blocks everything. I’m surprised the page was let through. All games, art, forums, community (including e-mail)and “security-proxy” sites have been blocked.

This company must really not want their employees messing around whilst at work. :/

censorship is frightening. How did people let it get so far to where someone can block “security” sites.

it sucks, but i’m trying to not feel so bad in knowing that this company is paying so much for internet, and then paying more to block it.

YouTube is not BAD!!!! So why is it then that it is Blocked? Because our school board doesn’t know jack-shit!!! Good for the people who get around those parental blockers! YouTube doesn’t allow Adult Material to be viewed by the public, you must have an account and be over 18. So youTube is very apporiate for school. STOP BLOCKING WEB SITES THAT ARE OKAY AND START DOING SOMETHING USEFUL LIKE REPAINTING THE SCHOOL!!!!

That’s even including the bottom of the damn computer desks where people write the sites that USED TO WORK to get on myspace.

filters are ruining education at my school

We have smart filter at our school, and sence they’ve put it in no one has been happy, teachers, students, and faculty. They’ve blocked everything, not myspace or other sites that they really have a reason to block. They’ve blocked wikipeidia, and other study sites. And while we can’t get on to these sites we can still get on e-bay, E-BAY!. I don’t have internet at my house, and sence I can’t get any kind of info because of the filter, I have to drive a couple miles in town to a Library. Last year, a teacher ranted a whole block because of the filter. She couldn’t get the national anthem but could get a stupid song from the radio. My boyfriend the smartest one in the school, no lie. Couldn’t get though it. Even though could get into j-pams and change peoples grades. It was surprising that not only students ask him how to get through it, teachers did as well. I think it goes too far when a filter is actually hindering our education, or lack of one.

ok, at my school we have 8e6 but we found ways around it. im going to tell one three of the ways that we found, all of which dont work for us anymore but might help you all.

first of all you need to downlode a program called ultra surf, or a program called freegate, most likely if your cought with this you will get into some form of trouble but hey its your choice rather you want to do it or not.

ok this is the first way

go to start-programs-america online-setup

if you do not see this then your computer is not able to do this hack.

start the setup and it will create a new folder inside your c:programs folder called aola

place ultrasurf/freegate in said folder and start it, then start your web browser.

your internet should be unblocked now…

if this does not work i will come back in a week and post the seccond way.

I have a computer class in my school, autoCAD, and I can’t see anything wrong with going on a game site (such as addictinggames or RuneScape, etc) WHEN MY WORK IS DONE. A lot of us are good enough at computers and drafting that we can finish a drawing with 10-30 minutes left in the class, so whats wrong with browsing forums, playing a few flash games, etc, as long as we don’t look at porn, or download stuff? I know no one in my class would be retarded enough to do anything like that, we all love the class and respect our teacher enough to not betray his willingness to give us freedoms.

That being said, I still gotta figure out how to get past Barracuda…

I’m guessing you did something along the lines of using a .bat file to open cmd and /net user’d the hell out of it huh? Man if only it were that easy where I go to school. Tried that a number of different ways only to get “access denied”… Got any ways around that?
Even worse (gotta give it to the school admins actually doing their job for once) they welded the cmos jumpers down so you can’t get access to that via the reset jumper(useful for switching boot drives if you catch my drift…)
Finally, does anyone here have a way around the 8E6 3000 filter? I tried to use a box w/ psiphon , but since the ssl certificate is self-proclaimed the filter keeps blocking it… 🙁

One of my teachers has a computer that he uses to type in the bypass code for the filter. All of the computers are connected via a wireless network and shared H: (network) drive. I have been thinking about using a keylogger (cain/abel) to get the pass but that could have some dire consequences so that’s not an option…

99.99% of all prox sites are blocked by this damn filter.
I think it’s adaptable because I was able to get onto HackthisSite.org a few times using .bat “command.com” then Ping SITENAME, and post the ip in firefox.. After about 2 days it was banned, both url/ip as well as about ten other forum sites. After that I tried splitting the html headers… That worked for about two weeks until 8E6 3000 decided that a patch was due… I’m just about out of ideas here…

8e6 R3000

One of the few things that you could try to get around the 8e6 R3000 filter is to set up a proxy at home. But beAware; do NOT set it up as an HTTP; use ONLY a specific IP address. As soon as you set it up as an HTTP, it gets put on a list of proxies that gets updated every week and sent to the 8e6 R3000 to check that no one in the network can use them. Put the word out, but make sure it doesn’t hit the ADMINS or else they can specifically type in YOUR IP address and block you from accessing anything, anywhere, from the network you have your external proxy on.

“I can’t do ANYTHING! They block EVERYTHING! This sux, etc.”

Yeah… I’m real sorry that schools ‘force’ you to use their tools for actual schoolwork and not screwaround time. No filter is perfect, but then neither are kids, and most of you definitely seem to fit into that category.

The tools to block websites are getting better, and they are learning to adapt to new schemes. That’s important since some of you appear to make it your life’s sole mission to get around these things.

Just remember something: The decision to block these sites, and choose WHAT to block is usually made at a much higher level than the tech guy – we just implement the decision.

NOW FOR SOME HELPFUL ADVICE (no, not more proxy addresses)

How about you work to CHANGE your school’s decision? It happened here, believe it or not, and I was happy to implement the new rules. Here’s what happened…

I was told to block Google Images because of the unsavory content that can be found there (yeah, like they’re not EVERYWHERE). So every time a student went to images.google.com, they’d get a: ACCESS DENIED. This website is blocked due to blah, blah, blah.

One enterprising student started something that snowballed into that decision being reversed. She did a report that had a lot of pictures on it, only, all of the pictures had, “ACCESS DENIED…” Yep, that same block message. The student got an ‘A’, and soon other students joined in (you’d be surprised how many teachers are on YOUR side on this!)

A student did a video project that had a scene where the whole lab full of students had computer screens with ‘ACCESS DENIED’

Another student stood up to do a verbal report on something and stopped in the middle of a quote and said, “ACCESS DENIED”, because the filter blocked the quote during her research.

And here was a novel approach; the students started getting their PARENTS involved, showing them not only the futility of blocking stuff, but the fact that it was making it difficult to communicate effectively. You’d be surprised how influential parental calls to the administration can be.

Eventually the decision was reversed and I happily changed Google Images’ status.

Stop screwing around with these filters and actually DO something practical that shows you are more than spoiled 10 year olds. Prove your case to the administration, faculty and parents and get them involved. Try a little civil disobedience, not out of disrespect, but for educational purposes. Be sure you are ‘educating’ the right people, ie, not the tech people (most of the time.)

And be vigilant. Remember, most adults tire easily and would rather ‘go with the flow’ than fight upstream all the time. They simply do not have the time or energy to match yours. BE THE FLOW. Show that your wishes are what the majority want. Get the teachers involved and for those who won’t cop, be sure to bring out all the limitations that the school filter places on you when doing reports. Sometimes the teachers DON’T KNOW how bad it is – EDUCATE THEM!

You have more power than you give yourselves credit for. If you believe in something strongly enough, it is possible to change the outcome. If you want it bad enough.

But through all this, keep this in mind: Someday YOU’LL be in charge (oh God, give me strength), and YOU’LL make the rules. Be realistic in what you ask for. Remember these days, but keep an open mind that maybe, just MAYBE, you were wrong after all…

Please…. High school is the age where kids “think” with their balls.

First day of school they are told what is acceptable and what is not on the school network. Third day of school I have to suspend the account of a kid who has given his password to god knows how many of his friends (something that was EXPLICITLY mentioned in the orientation).

Truth is that filters DO work. They are a tool that keeps 98% of my users honest, giving me the time to pay more attention to the known troublemakers, and find up and coming ones.

And you know what? They know they are being watched, and they still try to pull shit. Now what does that say about someones cognitive capabilities?

My job is not to keep people from myspace. It is to provide a secure, stable, and reliable network. If the filters were taken down we’d be hosed within a week at most.

Think about it. Without filters and firewalls you are having to defend each individual computer and server, rather than the network as a whole. That is an untenable position to be in.

And for the idiots who only want to have some “fun” at school. That’s what your computer at home is for, where you get hosed by a virus every other week and have 30-odd trojans running in the background at any given time.

Not on MY network, buddy!

Tools like you are why we have to have the access controls in the first place.

Transmission ends..

AH-HA!

Put the word out, but make sure it doesn’t hit the ADMINS or else they can specifically type in YOUR IP address and block you from accessing anything, anywhere, from the network you have your external proxy on.

agree - education is key in helping children online

The most effective solution is education. I would argue that filters are a useful tool but have major limitations. Parents need to spend more time with there children helping them learn how to use technologies more appropriately. Pornography does act on your brain like other addictive substances. Over time it weekens your ability to have logic be part of your decisions. http://www.virtuesmart.com is a great company focused on education and technology. They understand that education will always be the first line of defense.

rob says:

50% of kids admit to knowing how to get arround filters

Most kids know how to get arround filters. It is easier than anyone thinks. Try major search engine images pages. Thie filters don’t block the results of major search engines. If a kid changes the search engine preferences they have unlimitted access to pornography with the filter running. http://www.virtuesmart.com is a company that helps parents understand what they can do.

Yes… it IS sad. But what also is sad is when people constantly are swearing to. That’s MY three cents.

Anyway, yes, the filters are blocked at my school too; But that doesn’t mean we don’t USE them. While, “www.vtunnel.com” is blocked, “https://www.vtunnel.com” isn’t. Many other sites can be simply accessed by typing HTTPS instead of HTTP or nothing at all. If they don’t work with that, we just head back to Vtunnel.

My school uses the Barracudda filter system

My school uses the Barracudda filter system, does anyone know how to get by that. Our entire school is tired of this. Even our teachers get mad because they might have found a website the day before that they were going to use for their lesson that day, and when they come back and start to show the students, it’s already blocked. I have tried almost evrything on this page and nothing has worked. Either the filter system blocks the website, or when the website comes up and i type in the web address i need, it blocks it and the proxy website. And Sean, keep on doing what youre doing.

Anonymous =D says:

The school’s filters sometime really suck. The main problem is that images are blocked, so you can’t really do projects at school using google image. The teacher has a password to allow them to disable the filters, so we mainly use those.(they’re pretty easy to guess, “teacher’s name” as the username and their interests as the password)

For Barracuda you have to ask the teacher to disable the filter so that you can use Google image or whatever, and then after that you can pretty much go on whatever you want, as long as you don’t get caught. The teachers DO have a password, I’ve seen them use it.

As for the article, I think that the reporter is underestimating kids. Before 2nd grade most of us had figured out how to get past the school’s filters. It’s not like we’re going to watch porn or something during class. I think that the school’s filters are useless.

Senior 10 says:

Ok heres the deal, i did IPT for 3 years, hated it and have now dropped oout. me and my mates hacked into it until the teacher hacked into our account asked one of the boys what the website was and she blocked it but if she didnt know they would never know. teachers are dumbarses!! so if its that easy to hack into these accounts i see how easy it is for hackers!!

Erik says:

Kids and the Filters

So heres the thing, WHO CARES?! If the kids arn’t doing their work it’s their fault. The school spends time and money working on a way to filter the web, But yet again just like the 1913 prohibition on alcohol, the Marijuana Prohibition, and the No porn under 21 Prohibition IT’s NOT GOING TO WORK. Everyone has found away around everything. When was the last time you told someone what to do, and they did it without asking a question or complaining about it? Probably Never. So the Reality here is that if a kid isn’t goin to the their work, Whos problem is it? Who is it going to effect in the next 10 years? HIM/HER. The teacher gets paid to teach and be there, not to babysit them! LET THEIR BE FILTERS, LET THERE BE WEED, LET THERE BE PORN!

john says:

Why?

@christopher:

This is the most valid and factual comment here.

I myself am only 13 years old, and until this year I haven’t had much of a problem with school filtering. This year almost all internet sites are blocked. 90% of these would not be harmful to any educated and sensible user. All filters can be bypassed but it is an education of students and the public that is needed.

@Christopher: You may believe that religion and philosophy will educate your son about the dangers of life and how to respond but in reality most religion and philosophy is outdated and obsolete. Therefore we need to bring education into the present and look towards the future. The internet is only going to expand and grow and the filters will improve and so will the bypassing methods. The only way to bypass the dangers and other worries of the internet is by education that is relevant to current and future situations.

Rick says:

@adrianne, yes if it is their policy not to allow it. If they allowed it for you, it would be open for every student/employee. Now with all those people eating up bandwidth for music and other crap when people are trying to get to sites for school/work. Are you paying for the connection? No. I’ve seen school networks during the day, and the bandwidth is running close to peak. Now I don’t believe filtering things should be so tight that you can’t get to sites to do research, but give me a break, why would a student need to get to ebay at school? Buy crap on your own time, on YOUR internet connection.

If you find a site at school that is legit for your “research”, make a case for it, and send the admin/principle an intelligent email on why you need to get to it (intelligent being the key word there). Maybe they will allow it.

Thatgingerkid says:

So I love how all these non-brain shit stains are commenting about how their IT ppl for their school suck and how they are dumb and they block the stupidest shit. All these kids posting have no idea.
Fact of the matter is, this generation is very productive but very lazy. We need motivation. Wat better motivation than blocking the most popular sites. Myspace, Facebook, Addictinggames, and all the like. With out realizing it, I think our administrators have created a shit storm that they can no longer over-see.
I wont lie, Im in my senior year of high school and I dont care but I am showing the underclassmen how to do the shit I do. Why u might ask? Because i know that eventually it will get blocked. Well wat use is that?(Probably wat some are thinking) Simple. It makes them frustrated. They seek out new and inventive ways to bypass, anonymize and circumvent just like many others have done before me.
The theatre just changes every couple of decades. A few decades ago it was kids trying to buy booze and smokes. Now its kids trying to access facebook cause they want to see wat their friends r doing instead of talking to them between classes or, god forbid, calling them and going out to party or hang out in that bright and sunny place called “The Outside”…kind of sad if u ask me.
And for any who want to label me hypocritical; I do not have a facebook, myspace or any of those and I dont waste my time with flash games. I do this stuff merely to piss ppl off and I like to think of it as keeping our IT guy in a job :D.
Rant over. Dismissed.

I would be more understanding if our school didnt go to rediculous legths to keep us from doing anything other than what they have planned for us. They have paint, all games, the word game blocked in google, and we can only access the internet for 45min a day. This is complete bullshit and schools are WAY overprotective of there internet. Its not THAT important and they shouldnt be trying to look at and control every little thing we do in our own free time even at school.

Tabz (I have a really funky birth name!!!) says:

God forbid someone reads this, notes all the tricks, and finds a way to block them

Uhh, Helloooooo! Anything up there? Nope, its hollow. Every county in Virginia pays about 10 ppl to do exactly that. They go out, search for blogs about proxies and filters, fills out a big form about the site and why its inappropriate, and puts a big fat red BLOCK on it. In fact, this is the 1 blog about this topic that is unblocked I have seen (in 6 years!!!), proving these adults [yes Lee (post 29), these people from their generation are AMAZING with the computer] are VERY good at what they do. Then they would go through all of the suggested sites listed like teh ones here and block them. (BTW, I have gone and tried every single site suggested on this commentary board and each and every one of them that works is block by Lightspeed filters, so if anyone’s got any other ideas for Lightspeed, I’m open for suggestions!!!) They also go randomly searching on Google for sites that are ‘inappropriate’ for school, and then goes through the same form routine all over again. Now, at my school, they are having such a problem with people like us that hate blocks that attempting (nobody has ever had success!) to get past the filter, we are randomly having computer checks, which is where they take our computers, search it for proxies, downloads, and bad web-history.If you don’t have any (or somehow manage to hide, which nobody has successfully done either) you don’t get in trouble. If you do, then well, we’re talking expulsion. So yeah, to late, administrators and people like I’ve mentioned have already been here. 🙁
🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 I hate it!

HOW TO BYPASS FILTERS - SIMPLY MAKE YOUR OWN! HERE'S HOW...

OK Moving back on topic the easiest way to do it is to create a proxy site yourself! Just follow this tutorial exactly:

1) Go to glype.com and download the latest proxy script (NOTE THIS IS BLOCKED ON SCHOOL COMPUTERS AND REQUIRES YOU TO DO IT ON YOUR HOME PC OR USE A PROXY TO DOWNLOAD THE SCRIPT IN THE FIRST PLACE!)
2) Extract the zip file
3) Create another zip file and put the contents of the upload folder into it (DO NOT INCLUDE THE FOLDER UPLOAD JUST WHAT IS IN IT)
4) Put the new zip file onto usb flash drive unless you have downloaded the script and made the zip file on a school pc. If you have done so proceed to the next step.
5) Go to 000webhost.com for free hosting which the scripts you downloaded will go on to run!
6) Sign up to 000webhost
7) After creating a site with them go to ftp manager –> public_html –> upload
8) Once in the upload page go to archive upload –> browse –> find the zip file with the scripts on it.
9) YOU HAVE NOW SUCCESSFULLY CREATED A PROXY WHAT’S NEXT?

I’ll tell you what’s next! You can add different themes by going to glypedesigns.com and find plugins for your proxy on the glype forum at forums.glype.com

To install a plugin simply upload the plugin you downloaded to the plugins folder by doing the following:

Login to 000webhost –> FTP Manager –> Public_Html –> If the plugins file you created has a plugins folder upload directly to here by following the other steps if it doesn’t go to the plugins folder and simply upload there.
________________________________________________________________

FOLLOW THOSE STEPS EXACTLY AND YOU’LL BE HOSTING YOUR OWN PROXIES IN NO TIME!

Actually, many technology admins (like myself) couldn’t really care less about where you go on the Internet. In fact, I’m anti-censorship. The problem isn’t that we don’t trust students on the Internet, it is that we are required to filter you by law. If we don’t filter our e-rate funding is taken away (that is a lot of money).

So, if you don’t like filtering then write a letter to your representatives before egging your tech guy’s car =)

Its easy..

For those who think getting around school blocks is hard are well for a lack of a better term idiots. I am a 17 year old high school student and i can get around, and have successfully gotten around every filter i have ever come across.. None of this proxy crap. The trick is to trick the filter… Barracuda for instance blocks specific web addresses and is self adapting, well just force a secure connect to the website with a simple https:// thats all you need… Or you can get fun with it and ssh into other machines or vpn into a home network which all work the same or if your lucky just install a usb keylogger and log the teacher using an override administration password on a computer for you and if none of these work… Well here comes the fun brute force!!! Guys all im saying is when there is a will there is a way… These systems arent hard to beat so dont give up trying on them. When you fail try harder untill you bring it to its knees!

Anonymous Coward says:

Sometimes they do work.

Its stupid, I was getting past blockers using proxies or file sharing websites, and I guess others were to, so my school got new blockers that even block youtube, and are so crazy everything I know does not work. Although this security comes at a price: The allowed sites do not often work, and teachers are complaining that it messes with their lessons.

Nicolled says:

Preferrable VPN service

I was blocked as well, and this is very unfortunate for consumers outside the USA. I do believe that in order to comply with licenses it’s important for companies to do what they can to keep costs low. There are more restrictions with licenses being written into many developed sites like this now everyday.

I’m a American that lives overseas and enjoys online gaming and also great music and TV sites like hulu and Pandora. When this happens I can say it’s quite devastating since I really don’t have access to entertainment that others do. It’s unfortunate you can’t simply give them a ID or something to prove your American 🙂

I was able to get back on the site by using a American VPN service like http://www.primovpn.net . With VPN services these blockages are bypassed thankfully. But it sucks I have to pay more to see these sites now.

It’s very easy to use. Downloading is also awesome. Its more secure than other options.

One filter known to work.

I’ve seen that used before. Google translate and google mobilizer both get around it. Or just use TOR. Seriously, how did the service/maintanance guys not break it? I got it open the 3rd day back to school…

Point is, however strong a blocker is, there are legions of kids like me that are just waiting to break it. They will never block us entirely, so freaking spend that money to improve the school, not fight a lost battle.

Isaiah says:

NetSweeper :(

My school uses CIPA filter. i’m assuming they use all our tax payer money for that program because it doesn’t just block a site by the URL but by its content. the only way around it is to bring your own computer so since the software isn’t on your computer its just on the network and so you can bypass it. we also have securus to track what we do and take video of it all. so even if we find a way around it they will see what site we got on and block it manually.
