Being Scared Of Shopping Online Won't Protect You

from the identity-theft-happens-everywhere dept

With all of the talk of identity theft and data leaks these days, now we’re seeing stories about how people are shying away from shopping online as they’re afraid their data is going to get stolen. Even though the article starts out with an anecdote about a police officer who refuses to shop online, but had her credit card info stolen anyway — it seems to gloss over the fact that online transactions aren’t really the weak link for identity theft. Instead, it’s often the companies who already have your data who are leaking it — whether via insiders who are taking the info or by vulnerable computer systems. So, while all the talk of identity theft may have people shying away from online transactions, that won’t actually do anything to help stop identity theft.
