Telco Starting A Rumor Via Text Message To Spur SMS Profits?

We’ve all heard the stories of breaking news being spread around by SMS text messages, as many people now look to SMS as their preferred way to communicate. However, since it usually costs money on a per messages basis, would a mobile operator ever stoop so low as to start a rumor campaign by text message, just to boost their own profits? That appears to be the accusation some are making according to an article found at textually.org about an investigation into a fake rumor that went around by text message concerning a potential earthquake in the Philippines.
