Taxing Muni Tech To Heal The Digital Divide In Africa?

from the all-voluntary dept

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that African leaders are supporting a UN-proposed plan to tax wealthier cities’ investments in technology to provide money for technology in developing countries in Africa. They stand to be the beneficiaries of such a tax, so saying they support it is sort of pointless. Of course, the tax is entirely voluntary at this point, and it appears that, so far, only one Swiss city has signed up. While investing in technology in developing nations is a big deal, it still seems like many of those countries don’t have much of a development plan other than get other nations to give them technology, and then assuming everything else will work itself out.
