UK's E-University A Massive Failure

from the execution,-execution,-execution dept

Just as plenty of distance learning online universities are starting to show that the concept really can work quite well, people in the UK are trying to figure out just went wrong with their super expensive online university project. It appears that just about everything went wrong — and much of the fault seems like with the “if we build it, they will come” attitude of those in charge. They expected many private companies to come and fund the school initially, but the ended up with a single sponsor (Sun) who funded about 1% of what the school expected. They also expected students to enroll in droves, but only 900 did. For this wonderful bit of planning, the senior execs involved all received bonuses, just as the school was being shut down.
