Student Mobile Porn Leads To Ban Of All Mobile Phones

Alan Reiter is noting that two students in New Delhi have gotten into trouble for filming and distributing a short pornographic video via MMS. What’s interesting, though, is that the school they attend has now completely banned mobile phones because of the incident. This seems pointless for any number of reasons. First, it wasn’t the phones that were the problem, but the action of filming and distributing pornographic material. And, in fact, the students who did it were caught and punished. Why should everyone else get punished as well for an action that they had nothing to do with? Also, if students really wanted to do this, they’ll continue to do it outside of school, so the banning of phones within the school won’t actually do anything to stop this type of thing from happening — it will just make the school officials less likely to be aware of it. It’s the ultimate head-in-sand approach to dealing with these things.
