Electronic Nagging Backseat Driver Unveiled
from the shut-up-already dept
Someone anonymous writes in with a link to a story about IBM Middle East and UAE University unveiling a car with a “safety” device that consists of some voice technology that alerts the driver as soon as he or she has gone over the speed limit. The anonymous submitter notes, “I have a feeling not everyone would enjoy this innovation….” Yes, it’s basically the annoying backseat driver in your car who is always telling you to slow down. Still, it’s a step up from a car that gives you automatic speeding tickets (the backseat cop in your car) or the car that sprays the driver with water if it senses they’re falling asleep (the backseat bozo the clown in your car), which is also from IBM.

this is new?
Hardly a new idea. Years ago I had a car that would sound a buzzer when you went over a certain speed, which you could set on the speedometer.
Re: this is new?
I had a rental car like that in a foreign country, it made a really annoying noise when you went over 50 mph. I asked Avis if there was a way to turn that off, and they said there wasn’t, so I just had to make sure to stay above 50 the whole time.
