Ringtones For Electric Cars?

While Sun’s COO Jonathan Schwartz has talked about a future in which people will download “horn tones” to customize the sound they make when they press down on the steering wheel after someone cuts you off, REM’s well known frontman, Michael Stipe has a slightly different idea. He’s worried that electric cars are simply too quiet, and that they should be blaring out ringtones to warn pedestrians of their approach. Why ringtones as opposed to, er… regular songs on a stereo, is unclear, but by the time the discussion gets that far, we’re already taking the whole concept too seriously. Honestly, the only thing I can think of is that this combines two of the more annoying practices around: really annoying ringtones with people who feel the need to absolutely blast their stereos out their car windows.
