Smart Drug Devices That Can Watch For Cancer, Release Drugs As Needed

from the neat dept

Some very interesting (though, still quite early) research being done by some Israeli scientists is focused on building nano-scale devices made of synthetic DNA material that when inserted into the body would continuously watch for signs of certain types of cancer and, if noticed, would immediately respond with the proper drugs to fight that cancer. In test-tube trials, a mix of two different types of these “smart drugs” correctly noticed the intended disease and released the response. Obviously, it’s still a long way from moving beyond the test-tube, but this at least sounds promising.
