Online Pretend Marriages Worry Chinese Parents

from the er...-playing-house? dept

I’m not really sure what the popular games for children in China are, but in the US, girls (and some boys) seem to spend an awful lot of their young childhood playing with dolls and setting up mock families. In a stereotypical sort of way, it’s often considered a cute thing for kids to do. However, toss in a dose of the internet and people get worried. Parents in China are getting upset that their kids are expressing a “premature interest in adult family life” while playing a variety of online games that let them marry, go on a honeymoon and raise a family. Considering the typical uproar about violent video games in the rest of the world, you’d think that parents would be happy to see online games that pitch such “family values”.
