SFR First In France To Set 3G Date

SFR has set their launch date for 3G services in November of this year, although the COO, Pierre Bardon, said they would not hesitate to delay it if there are glitches. This prudence is well-advised: glitches have plagued the 3G Guinea Pigs, and SFR has no intention of becoming French Guinea. The SFR 3G rollout will involve 3 Billion Euros over the next 10 years. SFR is France’s #2 carrier, and #1 Orange has not yet committed to a date for their 3G rollout, but expect it to be in 2004. #3 Bouygues Telecom has a 3G license, but hasn’t announced when they will launch the network.

Orange Live

Well, to be exact, Orange is already commercially trialing the 3G Netwrok in 3 Major cities in France. Paris, Lille and an other one.
This gives clearly an edge to Orange for prime time 3G. Bouygues does intent to go for EDGE rather than 3G and would most likely leverage on their potential nationwide coverage to market themselves as the only highspeed Data Nationwide Provider (3G will be restricted to major city for SFR and/or Orange).

Cheers,

Laurence
