Most People Want Opt-In, Not Opt-Out Spam Legislation

from the seems-obvious-enough dept

While it’s been clear for some time that spam legislation that requires an “opt out” offering wouldn’t work, we now have proof in the complete lack of effect had by the CAN SPAM act. Of course, our elected officials, who are supposed to represent the will of the people, never bothered to take a poll. If they had, they would have discovered that the vast majority of people favor an “opt-in” standard for stopping spam. Of course, the big marketing firms that contribute to political campaigns don’t like that idea (even if they’re shooting themselves in the foot by encouraging more spam), and made it clear to US politicians that the completely useless CAN SPAM was the way to go.

Probably because the spam lobby snookered them into believing that taking serious action against spam would ruin the economy, or some such rot.

Good luck convincing the marketing droids of that last part. They seem to believe the opposite: that more advertising is always better, even when people say they hate it.
